When I had my wisdom tooth taken out they offered me Percocet but I declined and took 800 mg ibuprofen instead which seem to work pretty well. I have never had a problem with opioids by the way.

that's not what it means when someone says it genetic. The brain chemistry that triggers addiction in most is acquired through genetic predispositions

Not entirely accurate. If a drug comes out and companies hide the side effects (such as addiction), I'd say that the blame could be put on the companies.

Were the companies who produce these drugs really forthcoming with the side effects of these drugs?

Cigarette companies back the in the 50s or so never spoke about lung cancer and addiction to nicotine. Cigarettes were promoted to be safe and even healthy weren't they?

Fast forward to now...

I believe it can be put on the consumer now. We all know the addiction and health problems with these drugs.

Both.

Some people are just predisposed for addiction. Whether it be gambling, opioids, cigarettes, alcohol, porn, or whatever. Opioids are highly addictive, so if someone predisposed for addiction gets their hands on them it can be a dangerous combination.

Be thankful you're not predisposed for addiction. I'm not really either. I had some chronic pain issues 10 or so years ago and was prescribed more opioids than I probably needed, and I abused them. Never got addicted to them though. My little brother wasn't as fortunate.

It's the people. No one is holding a gun to their head forcing them to take pills. Blaming the pills is a way to avoid personal responsibility.

On another note, though:

And it's not a guaranteed thing. Meaning if your parent is an addict you will be also. It just means that SOME people (and it's hard to tell how many) honestly become an addict after one time. That could be drinking, gambling, drugs, sex, whatever. There are many things people become addicted to that ruin their lives. It could also be something dumb like collecting Coke product things.

Likewise, sometimes it's just 1 person in the family. Other times it's the whole damn family and sometimes they're all addicted to different things.

No one accidentally becomes a drunk or addict.

No, but our society gives a level of reverence to doctors that often makes them above reproach. When a doctor doesn't do his or her due diligence on the dangers of a prescribed drug, and doesn't educate their patient to its dangers, it's not always solely the patient's fault. Further, when the drug manufacturer hides the dangers of it from doctors and the public, there's blame there as well.

Blaming the problem on just one aspect of the overall crisis is extremely unfair and shortsighted. There is plenty of blame to go around.

Let's not. I couldn't care less if addicts off themselves with their idiotic choices. Crack, meth, heroin, fentanyl, whatever, I'm all for Murphy and Darwin weeding out the weak.

Did you even watch it?

Pain is subjective and she had to rely on her patients' honesty.

It's a gray area that she exploited but really it was her patients who are responsible.

If you go to a doctor and lie to get Oxy, Adderall, or benzos, that's on you bro.

Sugar should replace caffeine on your list. I’m not even sure caffeine is addictive.

I can assure you that only being able to take advil after a major surgery is absolutely terrible.

I had knee surgery in high school and my mom is one of those people that thinks one lortab and you'll be addicted, living on the streets trying to score meth. So after me surgery, the doctor sent me home with lortab and something else......she poured the entire bottle down the drain and only would give me liquid gel advil. Still the worst surgery of mine to date.
