This is incredibly juvenile take on the issue. Often people are given pain killers by the doctors and become hooked on them. Opioids are often highly addictive and the pharmaceutical industry knows this. They want people addicted so they can sell more.

This also why you see an outbreak of heroin addictions among young white people in rich areas

Yeah, I mean, look at how well it's worked for Purdue Pharma.

Drugs and opioids have been around forever and less regulated than today. Why is it just now a problem? Doctors used to prescribe housewives benzodiazepines just because. I could go on and on with examples.

It’s a societal problem where people don’t feel they have a purpose turn to drugs. They see everyone’s best life on social media and think they have it bad when in reality we live in the most prosperous time in history.

Exactly.

Purdue Pharma is a scape goat.
They are partially at fault for downplaying the addictive potential but what do you expect a private company to do when the FDA signed off on their studies that showed low addictive properties

Not submit doctored studies to the FDA

This

Every time a thread comes up like this it becomes abundantly clear just how little people understand about the pharmaceutical industry, how it works, how drugs get reviewed and approved, how companies can market their approved products, etc.

When a pharmacy is supplying millions of opioids to a town of 3,000 there is a bigger problem than just the addicts. The pharmacies and companies that make the opioids are a huge part of the problem. Because they see $$$. If people are addicted they are getting paid.

The Monkey

We hear the word addiction, and we conjure up a picture,
A junkie on the roadside, like a leper from the scripture,
These wretched little vagabonds, who’re wasting their own lives,
As they beg to feed their habit in the struggle to survive,
But they weren’t always creatures who were slaves unto the spoon,
Most started out as patients in a doctor’s waiting room,
They left as people hurting with a bottle full of pills,
With big pharma pushing poison so its coffers it could fill,
For all of us in some way look for comfort from the pain,
From Tylenol and booze to prayer, with herbs or novacaine,
So when a doctor comes to you,
Says “this will stop the Hurtin”,
You’ll take him at his word, for your trust in him is certain,
Not knowing that drug companies, are tempting him with cash,
To push their poison products out for every bump or gash,
And sure, they work to dull the pain, in fact they do it well,
But when they’re gone, they leave their victims wrapped up in their spell,
To feed the their new addiction,
They tell Doc they’re still in pain,
So he writes a new prescription, fills their pockets once again,
And it goes on until he won’t prescribe them any more,
But the lack of legal product doesn’t stop their need to score,
And so they’ll find some pusher who has access to supply,
They’ll pay whatever price he asks so they can get their high,
‘Cause without the little pills you see, the pain comes roaring back,
But really it’s the monkey of addiction on their back,
And those with jobs and homes and lives only the high they’ll crave,
They’ll sacrifice it all and be by opiates enslaved,
If they can’t earn the money for the price their high demands,
They’ll take it from their children’s mouths and out their loved ones’ hands,
It’s no excuse, they know it’s wrong, but that monkey is stronger,
He rides them and he lies ‘til they can’t take it any longer,
And It’s not just aimless junkies that society will shun,
It’s our mothers and our fathers,
It’s our daughters and our sons,
It takes ones who were decent and it turns them into fiends,
Until they don’t resemble the someone that they’d once been,
So politicians crack down, make it hard to get the pills,
But the companies who started this will line their pockets still,
Now the doctors won’t prescribe,
Even to those who really need it,
But that won’t stop the monkey who demands his victims feed it,
So In the absence of the pills, they find a substitute,
The demon known as heroin,
Into their veins they’ll shoot,
They’ll go from snorting pills to find their fix in a syringe,
Each needle steals their souls pushing them farther towards the fringe.
They’ll lose their jobs and homes and even loved ones won’t remain,
They’ll betray and hurt their loved ones to put poison in their veins,
They find themselves upon the streets, beg strangers for some dough,
The monkey doesn’t eat, so to their pusher they will go,
All semblance of their former selves, Is by The Monkey shattered,
And they begin to lose all sight of things that really mattered,
And no matter what they give him, well the monkey asks for more,
And so one night they’ll find themselves convulsing on the floor,
If they’re lucky then the nurses, will use Narcan to reverse,
But at the ones who killed their high to save their lives, they’ll swear and curse,
And most will waste their second chance, and make their way back soon,
To The Monkey that enslaves them, with the needle and the spoon,
But some will take that second Chance, at life they they’ve been given,
And Throw that cursed monkey off, take one more stab at livin’
And leave behind The Monkey’s lies and all that they were knowin’,
But The Monkey’s always waiting, for the hunger to start growing,
He’s lurking in the darkness for the moments when you’re weak,
When despair swirls all around you, all his lies he’ll start to speak,
Of how you’re bound to fail again despite how hard you’ve tried,
How all the pain can go away if you just let him ride,
Of how you’re weak and worthless, Oh, but none of it is tre,
The truth is that he’s powerless,
He’s not the boss of you,
Though at first he seems so massive and he doesn’t go away,
Let him know he’s just a monkey,
He’ll get smaller every day,
And when the road gets rocky and you start to lose control,
Remember all you lost when that damn monkey had your soul,
So if you give him nothing, find your feet and stand up tall,
You’ll look down and discover that the monkey’s very small,
And when you’re feeling weak,
Just know that soon the urge will pass,
And if you don’t believe his lies,
Then you can kick that monkey’s arse

You know who does agree that addiction has a strong genetic/biological component? SCIENCE

Read a research paper for once in your life. Addiction is not some personality flaw

I agree. If addiction wasn't in the person and it was in the substance then how do people get addicted to shite like shopping, cracking their knuckles and food. Seriously, fricking food. Something we need to live.

As a libertarian I'd like to see all drugs be legal. I would like to occasionally partake in recreational drug use so it pisses me off to no end that I can't do anything but drink alcohol because I can't trust the drugs that are available because theyre illegal and come from shady sources.

For people like me who can handle his shite, we shouldn't have to suffer and be denied enjoyment because some people are weak and can't handle.

Drug addicts don't piss me off because of some religious or moral objection or because I'm afraid they're going to steal my shite. They piss me off because they deny me the opportunity to legally use drugs.

Opioids need to go and it’s time for marijuana to be legal

People downvote but there is real pain relief in marijuana.

I live with chronic pain. Multiple surgeries. I have been prescribed opioids plenty of times and have never had an addiction problem fortunately. I deal with pain the old school way and grind through while taking ibuprofen.

That being said. I got high for the first time in many years a few months back, and all my pain literally went away for a few hours.

I don’t think I could deal with being high all day everyday... but it sure would be nice to have that option when I want to get serious relief.

Practice Fusion began soliciting payments from Pharma Co. X in late 2013 in exchange for creating an physician alert designed to boost opioid prescriptions by suggesting doctors focus on assessing and treating a patient's pain symptoms with opioid medication as a preferred option.

Practice Fusion pitched the software as a way to influence doctors and counter the unnamed company's declining opioid sales, stemming from heightened public awareness of addiction risks, according to court documents.

The goals of the alerts was to create new opioid patients and convert current users from immediate-release opioid medications to highly addictive extended-release drugs, according to court documents.

They may just be a cog in the wheel but they absolutely should shoulder some of the blame.

And I can’t even begin to talk about how devastating it’s been here in Kentucky. They shutdown a good chunk of the pill mills that were handing this shite to people hand over fist, on doctor’s orders. Dentist, pain management clinics, etc. If you talk to most people here in state who are addicts a good chunk started out by prescriptions given by doctors and moved right into heroin when they cut them off.

The fact that you are highlighting this as a gotcha makes it clear you don’t understand anything about this.

Short acting drugs/medications are infinitely more addictive. That’s why crack is one of the most addicting substances known. An instant short lived high that’s gone very quickly leaving you wanting more. So something is off with your quote. It’s probably from the plaintiffs allegations.

So many mixed emotions on this topic. I travelled the road with a daughter. Her issues were a result of genetics and social pressure. Been clean for al ost ten years, but I am thankful for each day, knowing the urge will always be there.

Have friends that have travelled the road because of medical issues. Over prescribed to the addiction level. Hard to watch someone resort to street drugs and prices. Imagine if you will, a $ 1K a day problem. That one quite & put a 9mm in his his head.

My largest fear at this point is for the youth. One fun night easily leads to a lifetime problem. Unfortunately, the money is just to damn big to stop it. I don’t have a solutions & doubt there is one to be found. Sad.
