You know, since LSU is one of the beneficiaries I have zero issues with this.
ETA: I do remember hearing such sentiments sprinkled throughout my life. Once upon a time they said such things referring to a list that included Texas and USCw. Before that, the list included Notre Dame and Michigan.
This is not new, but it isn't forever either.

Yet the superbowl had 18 starters who were 2 star or unranked players coming out of HS.
Completely irrelevant. This is about the concentration of talent.
Those unranked players you speak of were spread over teams across the country at different levels.
This argument is not about the accuracy of recruiting rankings.

In the composite this year, the pool of 3, 4, and 5 star athletes is about 3000. The pool of 2 star and below is roughly 300,000, not including athletes who never played high school football who switch to football later.

It’s kind of becoming what English Premiere League is in that regard (And several other top soccer leagues as well).
There are 20 ish teams in that league but really only like 4 teams that can put together the talent to compete, the other 16 are essentially hopeless. If you don’t have that sheik/big oil money or some other very wealthy owner who’s very committed ($) to winning, you don’t have a chance.
I think that’s also why they developed the champions league, which is analogous to our playoff which will inevitably expand. It’s the same teams at the top each year, no secret why.
Not an apples to apples comparison, but you get the idea.

UGA sits strategically located to many of the nations top recruits. It is mind boggling that they don’t have national titles by now with that talented a roster
Georgia's 10 highest rated recruits this cycle:
1. Kelee Ringo - .9976 - Scottsdale, AZ
2. Broderick Jones - .9947 - Lithonia, GA
3. Jalen Carter - .9913 - Apopka, FL
4. Darnell Washington - .9984 - Las Vegas, NV
5. Merkhail Sherman - .9833 - Washington, DC
6. Tate Ratledge - .9822 - Rome, GA
7. Kendall Milton - .9740 - Clovis, CA
8. Marcus Rosemy - .9737 - Fort Lauderdale, FL
9. Arian Smith - .9723 - Lakeland, FL
10. Sedrick Van Pran - .9715 - New Orleans, LA
Only two of Georgia's ten highest rated recruits are from the state of Georgia. In fact, only 8 players of the 25 they signed are from Georgia, and 6 of those 8 are rated .9100 or lower.
Georgia is recruiting nationally as good as anyone else in the country.
If I had to guess, I'd say that Georgia and Alabama once again have the top two classes in the country for 2021, with Clemson right behind them. In fact, Clemson may finish #1 in 2021, as they have 9 commitments already for 2021 with an average of .9553.
LSU pulled in a great class this year, but what Clemson/Alabama/Georgia are doing is on another level.

What people continue to miss is the fact that UGA only signed 2/24 top in-state prospects. That includes missing 3 in-state 5* prospects. UGA has the #1 class while most of the local kids want nothing to do with them. There has to be a reason why they are cherry picking 5-stars from across the country, but can’t keep their own at home. Three of the top 17 players in the nation are from Georgia, but signed elsewhere

Georgia has a problem holding on to their players. if you look at their 2018 #1 recruiting class, 7 of their top recruits either transferred or is transferring this year.

Is there a general reason why?

Football is a team sport. Those are generally more of the outliers. That’s 18 out of how many out of how players and many years? Remember, NFL isn’t just a 4/5 year program. There’s 10,15,20 year veterans. That’s such an astronomically small number. Even exponentially so then the 3,4,5 stars. Will some fall through the cracks? Be late bloomers? Get started late? Absolutely! Does a college team build a program off of them. Hell no!
Posted on 2/7/20 at 9:54 am to clemsonbru
Some it is due to the rating services giving kids bumps when they commit to the elite programs.
Posted on 2/7/20 at 9:55 am to clemsonbru
I think everyone is forgetting about the wildcard and that’s the transfer portal. These teams can keep signing all these players but due to depth and ego, these kids will eventually start transferring. I think the QB position was the first impactful place we’ve seen this with LSU benefiting the most but look at Ohio St, Oklahoma and etc. eventually you’ll start seeing other positions, filling in strategic gaps for other teams. The transfer portal will eventually help offset this.

Don't know the answer to that but take a look at this:
2017:Georgia top 3 recruits
1- Justin Fields 5* QB Transferred to Ohio State
2- Cade Mays 5* OT Transferring to Tennessee
3- Brenton Cox 5* OLB Transferring to Florida
2018: 4* S Otis Reese Transferring to Ole Miss
The list goes on

UGA spends about three times the amount of money relative to LSU on recruiting. However, it doesn't matter cause Kirby can't coach up his talent or even manage a damn football game.
Nonetheless, LSU needs to very significantly increase the amount of money it budgets for recruiting to keep pace. As Ed O needs to significantly increase the number of people on his staff dedicated to recruiting.

Kirby is the best recruiter in the nation.
Then follow that up with Saban, Dabo and Coach O.
Is there really anything Kirby is doing differently that doesn’t involve big bags of cash? Nicety of the area? come on. It’s not that different. (Nobody dreams of living in Alabama one day and they recruit just fine) What about propensity to get players into the NFL?...not that different. Possibility of winning championships? Well, not really and I’m not so sure that matters anyway. Kirby’s personality just that magnetic, huh?

He’s in a hotbed of recruiting. Within 5-6 hours of Athens is a majority of the nations top players.
It doesn't matter cause at last count after the first signing period, UGA only signed one of the top 20 recruits to come out of Georgia.
Of course, local recruits out of Georgia know better than recruits from out of state, that Kirby can't coach. So they go out of state. As most of UGA's recruits come from out of state cause of the massive amount of money UGA spends on recruiting.

Sorry- the years should have been 2018/2019 but hopefully you get the point

I see that on here a good bit, but man, Athens is really nice.
The Georgia road trip has always been my favorite.
I went to LSU because it was love at first sight, but objectively, UGA is pretty damn attractive.

It really is crazy. They've had some dudes come through that program. Mark Richt was going to get you 10 wins and maybe win the SEC East but that was about it. You look back at some of those rosters and it's crazy they never won it all.

quote:How does a coach keep pulling talent to a school who has had a top ten recruiting class every year since 2011 top 6 in the last 5 or 6 years (under Rcht as well as Kirby). A school that has won their division 5 of the last q0 years and the sec twice and been to the CFP championship game.
the real question is how TF does kirby pull that much talent
In that same period LSU has won their division twice, though they did win the SEC both times and o championship games winning the one this year. Prior to 2109, Georgia would have looked just as or more atteactive than LSU.
Georgia fans will tell you the same thing LSU (and Notre Dame and any number of other colleges) fans used to say “Georgia recruits itself”. Of course that’s not really true, but there is a kernel of truth to all of that. It recruiting momentum, which often outruns outcome. And there is him state/home school loyalties in play for schools like Georgia and LSU, though I don’t think it as strong as that once was.
What you are seeing at Georgia now is momentum. 2 or 3 more years of underperforming or Florida starting to win the bulk of the Easter division titles and that will drop off, maybe dramatically and maybe not.
