How Trump's National Security let him down; Soleimani related

Soleimani shouldn't have been the story; the story should have been Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis bc it was his Popular Mobilization Unit (PMU) forces that attacked our embassy in Iraq. We should have said that we targeted Muhandis and didn't know Soleimani was with him since Soleimani was forbidden to travel outside of Iran and thus bc he violated the UN mandate he became collateral damage.
Had the story been framed this way, it would have been a 1 day deal.

I understand where you’re coming from, but given the official ties between the Iraqi Government and the PMU’s, us brazenly and intentionally assassinating their leadership, with no other primary targets, in the middle of Baghdad would not have improved our standing in the country.
That would make it much harder for the Iraqi Government to play both sides and allow for continued American presence.

Politics in the Middle East requires far more subtlety and nuance than retaliating against every single mortar attack. Which is the primary reason we should never have gone in the first place.
You and I may want to leave Iraq, but unfortunately as a whole the United States Government and Military does not.
I really don’t feel like Iran’s influence is understated or underreported. If anything I feel like our own influence is underestimated.
This idea that because both governments are Shia that they get along and agree all the time so we should just call it quits isn’t true. There are considerable religious, political, and ethnic differences between Iraqi and Iranian Shias. There’s essentially a never ending clerical power struggle between Qom / Tehran and Najaf / Baghdad.

I think that would help strengthen the House Dems plan for today by using the incompetence of the military under Trump's leadership. "They specifically went after a target without knowing who would be directly affected."
This is the same group that can acknowledge that we are better off without Soleimani, but still want to limit his powers because he didn't ask permission to take out Soleimani

trump has had four national security advisors and two interim advisors in three years. And many would question the suitability of most of the people he has chosen
Bolton for an easy example...he’s rightly ridiculed but he didn’t get that job without being vetted by trump and his people and selected for it. Now he’s a national joke?
trump has made some pretty horrible staff decisions and it’s fair to question what affect that has and is having on decision making and managing the narrative

I have ad some conversations with folks I know who are pretty in the loop in the administration their take on Trump is he is good, really good at the "gut" stuff. All politicians have to use their guts from time to time but most don't have the ability to time and again come out with such positive results.
You can call it guts, instincts whatever you want to. Trump has that innate ability to read the situation and see through all the noise and options to get to the solution that resonates in America's interest better than most before him.
We got on the subject because I asked if Trump was lucky or good. I came out of the conversation more excited about the second 4 years of the Trump administration than I thought I could get.
Enjoy the next 5 years it is going to be the new golden age for America.

We have been treading lightly around the middle east for over 20 years...frick that! Trump should come out and say for every random American killed, a high level Government official of that country will be blown to hell by a drone. Do that a few times and you would be amazed at how quiet all the Death to America chants will become.

He’s gotten some pretty horrible advice from people who want him to fail. Remember - he was an outsider coming in. The insiders were showing him to the closet when he was looking for the bathroom and they then laughed at him behind his back. And now they can’t understand why he doesn’t trust them
