No they didn’t. The AP polls tried to pull that bullshite.

Long shot at best. They’d have to schedule a few big time non conference games, blow everyone else out and pass the “eye test.” Just not likely imo

Said it a million times. Conferences send a single team to be considered. Never ever two teams from the same conf. with a four team playoff.

You had 100+ voters (ap + coaches) and 5 different computer polls making the decision.
Now you just have 13 people.
Which one has the potential to allow more frickery?
Well, back then the 100+ voters and 5 computers let in Oklahoma instead of USC. Can you name a similar screwup by today’s committee?

I think Oklahoma was better than USC that year so I agree with their decision. And they played the Tigers right, 21-14. It's not like LSU blew them out leaving room to debate whether or not they even deserved to be there.

Schedule tough ooc games. I think you have to value SoS enough to where a 12-1 P5 conference champion will get in over a 13-0 non P5 team because of SoS.

The UCF's of the world should be doing everything they can to schedule one game a year with the likes of Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame type teams for big game exposure. If they lose then make it up in the year and go to second tier bowl like they likely would have anyway. If they win and then win out they then would have a legitimate shot in a year like this one where two P5 conference champs have 1 loss.

BCS also said after
BCS had nothing to do with after the championship game. It was just the system used to decide who played for the national championship. The coaches poll decided the champion.
AP poll is what you're looking for.

So you would rather an undefeated Clemson stay at home and have that controversy like 2003? Cool story bro.

Is that when you agree with the outcome? Give us a definition of "true champion".
Who was the "true champion" in 2003?

This is the worst part. There is absolutely no buzz at all about the bowls, even some pretty good games today. I’ve heard almost no one talking about them other than serious college football fans.
I wish theyd bring back the old bowl system, with conference tie-ins and everything. It would bring some really interesting matchups into play, and it would stop kids from skipping bowl games. Bowls would be done after tonight. Use BCS formula to pick the top two teams, and play a game on the second weekend of January. No added weeks to the season, interesting bowl matchups, bowls are relevant again, good players still play, and you still get a playoff.
I think it would decrease the need for four teams, because of some of the matchups you would get (pac12 champion versus Big 10, etc), but if it was determined that 4 was the better way to go, you could just play one extra week.

I don’t think that’s how it worked
How did it work?
The BCS had LSU #2 going in and awarded us the BCS Championship. The AP awarded their championship to USC. If not for the BCS, USC would have been the national champs and LSU #2. If the BCS had used the later formula instead of duplicate computers and formulas, the match up would have been USC vs LSU and there would be zero controversy.

Under the BCS an undefeated team would have been left out. Probably the defending Champs. This is the type of season the playoff was meant for and shows why 4, is the prefect #.

This year is the perfect example of why a 4 team playoff works.
Regular season is not watered down.
An 8 team playoff would have been full of first round blow outs.
And most importantly - no undefeated teams left out.

did a small school ever make it to the bcs championship game? The best teams have the best players with top recruits and resources, the championship is for the big boys there is no room for small schools.

The BCS was complete garbage. Clemson would be left out this year under that 'system'.
It also robbed us of an LSU vs USC epic matchup in 2003. I know everyone here hates the 2003 split, but it helped get us the 4 team playoff.

Their schedule would have left them out. Only problem with the BCS, in this case, is that it only put two teams in the playoff instead of 4. OSU deserved the #2 seed over Clemson.

The powers in charge of the BCS and the CFP are reluctant to acknowledge that the regular season, including the conference championship games is part of the tournament itself. A sort of time limited multi elimination game of musical chairs. Because of this and the wierdness of this tournament, they fail to adopt some simple eligibility rules that would make the sport more like every other sport we know of. That is you can't be eligible for the playoff unless your conference champion goes to the playoff. Yes a great team may be excluded, but it's equivalent to losing in the first round: you don't advance.
In 2003, because margin of victory was a key component and their SOS (OK was always good playing this game), OK was running away with #1. Because of the way the season played out, they were virtually guaranteed a spot in the championship game before their conference CG. Then they had their asses handed to them in a real bad loss. The human polls tried to punish them, but they couldn't legitimately place them lower than 3 and this guaranteed their spot.
USC was #1 in both polls and LSU #2. In BCS terms we were #2, but it was a virtual tie. If the Boise State/Hawaii game result was reversed, then USC would have been #2. If the BSC had adopted the rule I suggest above, then the championship game would have been between USC and us and the split championship wouldn't have happened.
The split happened because the AP had no obligation to respect the BCS stupidity. They voted USC #1 and absolutely nothing happened to change that opinion.
