What is wrong with the currently terminal? Did we really need to spend $1B?

It's funny, I'm watching two large airport projects happen - the place where I grew up (LA) and the place where i live (UT).

Where Louisiana is way overbudget, way behind their timeline, and has all these problems, the new SLC expansion and rebuild is on budget, on time, and actually being sped up because they can.

And I drive through it every day. The current SLC has been pushed to it's max right now, but even with that happening, they've managed the new build, somewhat on top of the current one, really well.

I wish MSY could get their stuff together, it isn't complicated.

Chicken, you will see nothing but Louisianians, mainly New Orleanians, defending this.

Wut? This whole process has been almost universally shite on, especially by locals

Lol the current terminal is nice for getting in and out quick but really sucks for concessions & amenities. New terminal will blow old one out the water. Also, the new terminal will keep landing fees for airlines low with the lower opex required.

Scruffy heard that airports always run overbudget and take longer to complete than predicted.

If it gets to that level it is definitely a clustefrick
It doesn’t get to a clusterfrick level until 15 years after it was started and billions overbudget?

It’s an airport. We’re prioritizing concessions over getting in and out quickly?

not like there's a wealth of work to compare, new airports aren't sprouting up all over the place, they are, however, perpetually under renovation/expansion/upgrades, some necessary, some not, got to extort the airlines and tap into that fund, baw!

Could you even imagine? Literally the only reason I ever fly out of NOLA is Southwest.

BR did everything but swallow to try and get SWA. I don't think BR is an option especially with Hawaii and the Max issue.

It's not being built just for better concessions you fool.
With that being said, there will be a ton more restaurant/bar/retail $$ generated with the new place. It's a damn embarrassment sometimes to see how outdated and pitiful those choices are currently. That little bar in the Southwest terminal is depressing as all hell.

The more efficient security check point set up along with a much better luggage handling design along with other things make it well worth a new airport.

Two of the terminals were completely redone in the past 20 years and are as servicable as anything in any other airport. They could have rebuilt the nasty SW terminal and revamped the security situation for all three, and kept as many, if not more gates, than this $1+ billion boondoggle, for 10-20% of the costs, with a perfectly fine service infrastructure already in place.

But that wouldn't satisfy Mitch's ego or his need to grease others enough, so we're left with this clusterfrick for years to come.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the airlines also push for a new airport?
