Proud dads, at which point did you realize you are not a coach?

We’ve been stuck in a horrible cycle of being on teams coached by jacklegs who politic and power trip their way into controlling these sports teams but do not have a fricking clue of what to do when they get the keys. Our school community is plagued with it in virtually every sport, we finally broke down and defected to a club team with hopes for better instruction for the kiddo and a less toxic environment overall. There are sports for which there is no escape unfortunately.

Why do guys continue to do this shite when they are clearly ineffective?

Psst, never. I coached Cayden's 11u team to the Mardi Gras Blowout championship this summer.

Because people like you complain but never volunteer.

It’s youth sports. Chill.

We beg and beg for coaches. Every sport, we have a few dads that step up at the last minute because we tell them if they don't find a coach there won't be a team.

So in that environment, I sure AF can't tell a bad coach he can't coach anymore. We don't have any other options.

Pretty much the only time we tell someone they can't coach, is if they are being abusive.

I think I’ve reached my maximum coaching level in soccer this year at u8. I don’t know much about soccer but no one else signs up to coach. I’ll gladly be an assistant in the future. Tball bout my max for baseball.

Every team my son has been a part of they have practically begged parents to coach. I receive an email every season he plays saying we need coaches.

One season they actually moved my son to another team because I said I'd volunteer to coach if needed. They had a team without a coach so they moved him because my sons original team had one.

If you do not like your sons coach, move him to a different league.

I was opposite. I refused to coach until I realized I'm fricking good at it and love it, and my players want me there.

Yes but then met other parents and decided to sponsor instead.

Do you have to play the kids who suck on your team as much as the rest of the players at the young ages? I would struggle with what’s acceptable, like if someone’s kid is mouthing off to me when I’m trying to teach them stuff, can I make them run laps?

I’m a HS soccer coach and my daughter was terrified when I went to her first game because she grew up watching me basically yell at kids. I didn’t say a word, not even a “good job” while on the sidelines. I was there in support, but in total silence. When asked, I told her I coach those kids so that’s my job I’m not her coach so I let him do his job. In 6 years I’ve never more then clapped

The following observation comes from living in the Deep South a long time:

One of the negative issues of being a dumb person is that they (unlike the fictional Forrest Gump) ordinarily do not know that they are dumb.

If you’re around these folks, you can’t expect them to wake up one morning and admit they’re not equipped for a task they’ve been doing for years.

They consider themselves properly equipped for the task.

Move on and chalk it up to experience.

If there’s no coaching or the coaching is incorrect/bad, do not put your kid through that. It will be detrimental to their beliefs and skills.

Its very awkward and difficult to tell a kid and/or parents that what they have been taught for 4-6 years is wrong and what I’m trying to teach is correct. Almost always met with resistance and doubt. Next, comes questions as about playing time. Then, you’re a dick for not playing the kid bc their skill set is lacking and others have progressed correctly.

It’s so easy coaching from the stands isn’t it.

Agreed. I have several friends in the HS Head Coach fraternity in and around BR. One of them has a favorite saying; “Every man in America is an expert at two things - BBQ and coaching football”. I realize I’m speaking about HS but it’s much the same with the youth teams.

The worst "experts" are the ones who sit in the stands and criticize the volunteers.
