I had to go into the bank earlier and there was a young girl at the counter in front of me, maybe 25ish and she said to the teller, "I told my mom if I get pregnant she has to quit her job and watch the kid, daycare is expensive."

I'm thinking the conversation could have gone like this:

Mom: You're married now. You've been married for 6 months. When are you having a kid? I'm not getting any younger.

Daughter: Mom, we're not ready. I have to work. We can't afford the day care.

Mom: You're not getting any younger. Neither am I. I want to enjoy kids while I can move around.

Daughter: Fine. If that's the way you feel you can quit your job to take care of them so that we don't have to pay child care.

I kind of feel like if you can't afford everything that comes with a kid then you shouldn't have one.
I get that childcare costs a lot of money, but I just can't see even asking someone to give up their job to convenience my desire to have a kid, much less just assume that they should do it.

Eh. There’s nothing wrong with families relying on each other.

Exactly.
My FIL retired very early and they have always loved being able to help out in anyway with our kids. MIL watched my oldest part time for the first two months until we found a good lady to take over.

Every since my kids were old enough to hop on their scooter/bike, they loved nothing more than to ride around the corner to their grandparents to go get snacks and visit.

Inlaws have always been more than happy to help out in anyway. They love it and the kids love it.

Now I would have never expected that from them or worse demanded it in anyway.

eah that's the kind of joke my wife would make.

My generation and below are hyperbolic as frick. We say shite like this all the time, but it isn't supposed to be literal no matter how many times we say literally.

All of this.

Also, many grandparents are only working to have something to do during the day. I wouldn't ask as a end-all solution, but when we had our first, we did ask something like "hey, we are lining up care for the upcoming little shite maker, are you retiring soon and would you like to watch her or do we need to find a facility?"

Any person who would say this out loud to a stranger is trashy, not OT everything is trashy, but legit trashy. Her mom probably doesn't have a career, but a job at dollar general.

If said verbatim as the OP quoted, yah...but I'm positive I've made similar comments in a joking manner about my parents or in-laws watching the kids for free. And they don't work at the Dollar General.

When I have a kid(s), I am going to build my mom a separate little cottage on the property. She won't have to work anymore, and she can look after the little ones, garden, and enjoy some goats and dogs. She likes the arrangement.

we're talking about the parents of 25 year old. how old could these people possibly be that you think they have nothing left in their life to accomplish?

My pops would laugh me out of the house. They are grandparents not pre school teachers.

"Hey OT, I don't have a sense of humor and can't tell when something is said tongue in cheek!" - OP

I'm pretty well versed in sarcasm, but that, unfortunately, was not the vibe I got. She seemed pretty nonchalant about it, not incredulous about the cost of daycare. Maybe she was joking, but it wasn't my impression that she was. who knows.

yeah....I'm gonna go with no to that too. My folks raised me, their obligation ends there. anything that has to do with grandkids is just them having fun and getting paid back for all the bull shite I pulled as a kid.

Spoken like a man who was raised right. This whole generation of "entitlement" is sickening.

her parents sound like they did a pretty piss-poor job with her, so they probably shouldn't be in charge of even more kids

If you raise your children, you will be able to spoil your grandchildren. If you spoil your children, you'll be raising your grandchildren.

I agree with both: 1) dont have kids if you cant afford em and 2) daycare is insanely expensive

Why can’t this lady be a real woman and watch her own child? It’s so pathetic and sad parents can be these days.
