I ripped off Columbia House and BMG at least half a dozen times.

There was a lot of debate on rec.audio.misc and others about whether they used second rate stamping of cd's for the club.
The only difference I saw was the CRC indicator on the disc.
Sound Warehouse in Monroe was buying peoples used CD's and packaging them as new and charging full price.
They didn't want record club CD's for obvious reasons.

You only think you’re old ... I did it with 8-tracks.

CD sounds better that typical MP3.
Exactly what he said when he was ranting about not being able to find certain CDs nowadays.

It does. You'd have to get a music server because of the space taken and download high def music to beat a CD. Apparently Tidal allows for a solid lossless streaming option. I don't care that much these days.

Since we're all wondering how they made money...
In 2000, BMG and Columbia House had gross revenue of $1.5 billion.
My favorite is that they'd buy masters to press discs, but didn't actually have distribution licenses to do what they did. They'd just pay publishers 75% of the royalties they'd have otherwise been entitled to and the publishers just cashed the checks and accepted the fricking. The mail order houses sold so much music that if anyone squawked, the mail order house would just stop selling their albums, fricking them even worse.
I mean that's goddamned BRAZEN.

Was only way we could get the records we wanted right away. Yeah, we had to pay for 5 at full price but it was worth it back in the day !

Yep. Still waiting for my Jesus Jones CD in the mail.

My daddy use to preach "if it sounds too good to be true, that's because it is" and I remember people who did this and said "they send you CD, when they send you the bill just don't pay them back", but because of my daddy always saying the too good to be true, I figured there had to be some type of catch so I never did it.

I did it and BMG at same time. Came away with 24 CDs and they were all delivered on same day. My room became a concert hall.
I must have spent 2 hours that night shuffling around my 64 count CD album.

Was it really a scam, though? I mean, it operated exactly as advertised.
Unless you were lazy and didn't cancel right after you got the first batch, you could make out like a bandit.
It really did exactly what ot advertised, and you only got stuck if you were stupid and let them send you stuff once it hit full price.
