Correct me if I'm wrong, but you didn't have the option to receive free CDs and then cancel. Part of the deal was you had to buy so many at full price right? I think that's what the OP and others mean. A lot of us got the free shite, and then ditched the idea of buying anything.

Yep. I'd get the albums and record them then send them back.

Nope. CDs definitely sound better than typical MP3s and there is little debate.

Not a scam. You got more free than you were obligated to buy.

Columbia, BMG, and Sound Warehouse closings in NO, BR, Hou, Austin with $1 to $4 CDs, account for a decent hunk of my collection.

Always did the minimum, then cancelled, and began again. Over and over.

You're dumb.

mp3 was a revolution because it is lossy compression of the enormous .cda files of standard cd's and enormous .wav files used in computing. A 3 minute song goes from about 30 MB to 3 MB. It does this in part by literally removing some of the sound and thus lowering quality. iTunes today is better than some of low fi shite on napster 20 years ago but it is still noticeably inferior to a CD

But CD's, tapes, etc are really all inferior to vinyl. Because vinyl is vibration of the music mechanically impressed in the record, and played mechanically back by vibration from the mold. The digital conversion of CD's creates a wall of sound. But that's a different thing

I have over 200 CDs in my closet to this day because of these deals

I ordered them to so many addresses and names and just bought one or whatever it was to get the others. Always cancelled immediately so I didn’t get the monthly CD.

Even as I kid i knew it had to be a scam

Like most things you had to work the system. Fulfill your obligated purchases for the 12 CDs and then quit. Columbia House would send me another offer. I racked up on CDs this way for a few years.

Until you get specks of dust, scratch, or a little warp on it. Vinyl can capture the full sound wave whereas digital is a series of snapshots with less range simply put.

Some old songs I can remember listening to as a kid had certain crackles on them as they played. I still hear them in my head. Especially with Doobie Brothers, steely Dan, Kiss, billy Joel.

Yep.

Wasn't really a scam. Regular price was decent. Overall you got the CDs for half price, so you just needed enough ones you liked.

I had the biggest CD collection of all of my friends thanks to these services.

Frequently when driving I’d reach my destination before the passenger was finished looking through my CD albums to select the one they wanted.

Over and over and over. All combinations of my name as well as names I could come up with rearranging letters. I even signed up my grandfather.

In the early 90's, you got 10 free CD's if you bought one at full price then agreed to buy one more within like 6 months or a year or something. At least that's how I remember it. So most everyone would order 12 CD's, they'd send all 12 along with a bill for the 2 at full price. Some people paid that bill, then canceled. Some just ignored the bill.

They'd then send you a monthly card with that month's selection. You had to mail it back to decline it, or it was automatically sent to you and you got a bill for it.

Thing was, they had no process to verify the person ordering. Never asked for driver's license, or social security, or anything. Just name and address. We'd sign up in all kinds of made up names.
