Did Columbia House in HS then BMG in college for CDs, then did CH movie club for DVDs and Blu Rays once I started working.
The scammy part was them sending you selections if you forgot to opt out, but you could write “refused” on the box and send it back if you hadn’t opened the shipping package.
Some of the DVD boards got the system for doing this down to the point where people would know the best ways to get the most high-MSRP titles for the least required purchases.
I swear half of the copies of Armageddon - Criterion Collection sold came from people doing CH then flipping it for something else since it had a MSRP Of $40-50.

If we'd forget to send the card back declining the CD, we'd take the unopened CD to Walmart and get cash for it.
The BMG CD's didn't work at Walmart because they had a weird UPC on them.

I scammed them so many times back in the day.

Yeah, tried that once and found out it didn’t work.
Figured it was worth a shot since it was on December 26th and they were doing massive amounts of Christmas returns and exchanges.

OMG I forgot about this!!! The best part was if you were a minor you didn't have capacity to enter into a binding contract, so you could sign up and just get the 12 CD's for a penny.
