TLDR: white lenders didn’t give enough loans to black farmers, who defaulted and lost their farms = racially motivated theft of billions of dollars.

quote:

Joe Brooks, the former president of the Emergency Land Fund, a group founded in 1972 to fight the problem of dispossession, has estimated that something on the order of 6 million acres was lost by black farmers from 1950 to 1969.

quote:

Although the FSA ostensibly existed to help the country’s small farmers, as happened with much of the rest of the New Deal, white administrators often ignored or targeted poor black people—denying them loans and giving sharecropping work to white people.

quote:

Major audits and investigations of the USDA have found that illegal pressures levied through its loan programs created massive transfers of wealth from black to white farmers, especially in the period just after the 1950s. In 1965, the United States Commission on Civil Rights uncovered blatant and dramatic racial differences in the level of federal investment in farmers.

quote:

The commission found that in a sample of counties across the South, the FmHA provided much larger loans for small and medium-size white-owned farms, relative to net worth, than it did for similarly sized black-owned farms—evidence that racial discrimination “has served to accelerate the displacement and impoverishment of the Negro farmer.”

quote:

In Sunflower County, a man named Ted Keenan told investigators that in 1956, local banks had denied him loans after a bad crop because of his position with the NAACP, where he openly advocated for voting rights. The FmHA had denied him loans as well.

quote:

In the 1950s and ’60s, Norman Weathersby, a Holmes County Chevrolet dealer who enjoyed a local monopoly on trucks and heavy farm equipment, required black farmers to put up land as collateral for loans on equipment.

quote:

Many black farmers who escaped foreclosure were defrauded by white tax assessors who set assessments too high, leading to unaffordable tax obligations.

quote:

Black people’s lack of access to legal services complicated inheritances and put family claims to title in jeopardy.

quote:

Darrick Hamilton, at Ohio State, translates this land loss into a financial loss—including both property and income—of $3.7 billion to $6.6 billion in today’s dollars.

So subtract that amount from the tax money owed to whites for subsidizing the welfare state.

Thanks, Obama.

I doubt if he REALLY wants to get into a debate with white people about who stole what from whom.

Gonna be honest with you, compared to all claims of "racism!" out there, this seems pretty well research and reasonable.

A lot of government programs DID screw black people. I didn't know about this one but it doesn't surprise me.

All the more reason NOT to trust government to solve your problems. The private sector tends not to care about black or white. Their color is green.

Give them some Federal land and build some casinos for them and let them compete with the Indians. Can we call it all good then?

I remember when reparation cases for black farmers was first litigated. There were about 100 black farmers. After it became class action there were 100,000 black farmers.

When are leftists going to just outright call for a tax on white people? Because that’s where we are going at this rate.

There were some very surprising quotes in the article

quote:

99.9% of white people had nothing to do with this.

Your supposed summary here doesn't match the lines you quoted.

Which part of this gives you heartburn? Are you denying that the federal government provided lots of "support" (i.e. welfare) for whites in the mid century while simulataneously excluding blacks?

We know some messed up shite was done to black folk in the 50s. Today you can get a business loan solely for being a minority so not sure why this is still relevant

I don't really doubt that this happened, and was done intentionally. That said, what is to be done about it? The only real way to do justice is to start at 0, not at -60. Do right now. If we try to compensate for all historical wrongdoings, then we will never accomplish anything.

And we (white folks and black folks) originally stole it from the Indians. So that being the case two groups of thieves fencing or squabbling amongst themselves over "hot merchandise" is really of no consequence.

Aside from that what about the poor whites who stole cheap land from the Indians in OK, TX, Kansas, Ark and other places who other whites stole from them during the dust bowl and the 20's and 30's and were forced to flee to Ca. That must be in the trillions of dollars in land. But like I said it was all hot to begin with.

Pay up whitey.

I suppose you could give this portion of the populous every thing the want and it wouldn't be enough. As I drive around south Dallas, I try to remind myself how appreciative they are of what they have.

I didn't steal anything from anyone.

Watched my daddy try to stay afloat paying an 18% operating loan on his row crop operation & hog farm while feeding $1.25 bushel corn to six cent hogs during the Carter administration. He was white & lost everything he had at the time. Where tf do I sign up?
