What kind of trashy parent makes their kid pay for their first car? Just buy them an old used car or get a new car for yourself and give them the old one

Jesus, man, what were his insurance rates?
This was 11 years ago so I don't remember the exact amount but it was high. He dinged a parked police car backing out of his parking space at the mall about a year later. Freaked out and left the scene and didn't tell me. Of course, they tracked him down and gave him multiple tickets. Our insurance dropped him and he had to buy his own.

It depends on what we mean by 'pay for'.
If they make them fully responsible for all expenses, they are either overbearing hardasses or poor. Making someone responsible for some of the expense is totally reasonable as a lesson in money management, though.

I will buy their vehicle and take it away as needed.

My son just turned 16 a couple of months ago. We did not buy him a car, but we have a 3rd vehicle that he drives right now. We will eventually buy him one, but not the one he wants. He want a Jeep Wrangler and I already got a quote for insurance on one...and nope. There are 3 rules for him to have his own vehicle.
1. Absolutely no alcohol in it at any time.
2. He has to work for gas money.
3. He has to keep his grades up.

My folks just helped with their credit. Insurance, Loan, and etc were all up to me. This was also after I held a job for over a year and this car was only 13k.
I plan on buying the car straight up, so she wont have any interest. Just a monthly payment to me. And then shell have to pay her insurance and gas.

This happened to me and I dropped out after 2 semesters.
Then he will be paying me back for the car!

Depending on the model, her insurance may well exceed what she would pay to you as a reasonable recompense. Insuring teenagers is a bitch.

I was told, "don't expect me to help you with any future cars." Hence why I have three vehicles worth less than 15k

So teaching your spawn to set a goal and that hard work with a little financial responsibility is now trashy

I plan on doing the same thing my parents did for me. My son won't have to pay for a car or insurance until he graduates. He will also drive beaters until that day happens.

I paid the down payment on mine which was somewhere around half. My parents picked up the payments. That will probably be the route we take.

No way in hell I'm giving a young driver the keys to a Wrangler. I've seen too many teens killed in their Wranglers in rollover crashes

I paid my mom $250/month to help with the note and insurance (came out to around half), and I paid for gas, inspections, and most maintenance. This was my choiceI'll probably have a similar setup for my kids, amount TBD.

Not something I plan on doing. I had to work in high school and 2 jobs in college. I busted my arse so that my daughter doesn’t have to do what I did. I’ll have her pay for her own gas but I’m not gonna have a note on a 16 year olds vehicle. We’ll either buy in cash or give them hand me downs.

Why punish your child--its only money so I will pay for their cars and related expenses until they are 25
Posted on 8/12/19 at 1:38 pm to NATidefan
I bought my first car, and my parents paid for the insurance and gas. Hopefully, I will be able to pay for it all for my 2 boys when they are old enough to drive
