When my daughter hit 16, we gave her my wife's car. She would have had to catch the bus to school in the dark. (This is FL, and Fl man is real.)
She held down a massive school schedule and is in this same car for college. She got enough in scholarships to cover UF. I can damned sure buy her some insurance, give her gas money, and money for pizza.

We purchased late model used cars for each of our kids when they started college. Paid for insurance and maintenance, but they paid for gas. It was a one-and-done proposition so it needed to get them through college and their first couple of years of work.

No, but it won't be terribly nice.

I worked a retail job in HS at a hardware store. Pretty tough to rack up hours when the store closes only 2.5 hours or so after school let's out and you have after school activities 2 or 3 times a week.
This was after I got a car though. My parents would probably laugh at me if is asked them to shuttle me to and from work 5 or 6 times a week. In addition to the school pick up and drop off routine.

I bought my first truck, it was a 72 Chevy pickup. 900 bucks. I was 15 yrs old in 2006 when I got it. Rebuilt the engine myself and redid the entire interior. Looked sharp. Loved that truck.
Then gas went sky high and driving 20 min to school and back was killing my parents due to gas costs (it got like 6 mpg) and the truck had no AC and it was hot as hell after 2 a day practices so they finally agreed to buy me a 2000 z71 if I paid for half of it. Then bought me a new truck for graduation because I signed a football scholarship for college

I will buy 1st car (nothing over $5k, with AC). They pay insurance if not in school, so reason not to put school 1st (my parents made me work azz off at minimum wage to pay $200/mo for insurance and gas, averaged 5 hours of sleep a night playing football, working 30 hrs/wk, school, and see my gf for 3 hrs a week). No way doing that to my kids.

My very first car I think my parents paid for it, but it was cheap and a lemon..
So on my very next car purchase (which came quickly bc the motor went bad with the quickness)
I worked and saved up half, my parents met me on the other half of it.
I think this was a nice agreement.
And I loved loved loved loved my next vehicle.

Well, my kid don’t have $40K, so...
ETA: I do make him pay $1,000/yr. of the insurance though.

That’s what we did with our son. On top of that he buys his own gas. Only time we doesn’t have to pay these on his own is during football season when he doesn’t have a steady after school job.
Am we didn’t buy him an expensive vehicle either. He’s got a 2003 F150. It’s solid, reliable, and the body is still in good shape. But if something happens to it, oh well, no big loss. I leaned a valuable lesson years ago before I ever had kids, only a fool spends a lot of money on their first vehicle because chances are it not gonna last, especially a teenage boy’s vehicle.

I told mine when she turned 16, that I would pay for 1/2 the car insurance, but she would have to pay the other half.
She ran to googled the insurance rates right away. That was three years ago, she hasn't brought it up yet.

My daughter paid me back about 4 fold. She worked 12-16 hours a week thru college for sorority dues and a little spending money.
I pray my two boys are as cheap as my daughter was.
