quote:

The U.S. spends 35% more per pupil than the average among countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).[7] Among those countries, the U.S. falls behind only Denmark, Norway, and Luxembourg.[8] In 2015, the latest year for which OECD data are available, combined primary and secondary spending in the U.S. reached $12,800, significantly higher than other major European nations such as the United Kingdom ($11,400), Germany ($11,100), France ($10,000), Italy ($9,100), and Spain ($8,300).

quote:

Most Americans believe that the U.S. spends too little money on K–12 education. But most also dramatically underestimate what we spend. Nearly one-third of Americans believe that we spend less than $4,000 per pupil[4], and parents on average believe that their school district spends about half as much on their child as it actually does.

quote:

America spends more per pupil than any other major developed nation—10% more than the United Kingdom and 28% more than France; in the OECD, only Norway, Switzerland, and Luxembourg spend more.

LINK

I have a few questions.

1) Why do so many americans underestimate how generous our k-12 system is in terms of funding?

2) If the k-12 system is so awash in dollars, why is teacher pay such a big issue? Why isn't this money finding its way into teachers' pockets?

3) Why do other countries get so much more bang for their bucks on primary and secondary education performance?

4) Maybe the data in the OP is misleading or not telling whole story?

5) Do primary and secondary schools in other nations not have things like athletic programs, clubs, after school stuff, bands, theater, etc?

It’s more about how we use the funding I think. I have an office in Denmark and they have to learn three languages by the time the graduate. Learn, as in, they only teach certain grades in the languages (German, English, and Danish).

Our top students are as good or better than any. We just have a lot more bottom students.

Local politicians have completely fleeced the American tax payers for decades. All over the country, not just in the illiterate states

I blame for-profit schools and insurance companies.

If $12k is the avg per pupil, I'd like to know the variance from school to school. How much is spent per student in a good school district vs a bad one? Why do we have some title 1 underfunded schools? Why are teachers paying for school supplies out of pocket? Crazy to think of the inefficiencies here if that's what we're spending.

I'm totally uninformed on this topic. Just seems the reality is BOTH that we spend a lot per student AND many schools aren't well funded/provide poor quality of education.

Waste in education spending is beyond ridiculous.

Most of the issues that plague public education cannot be fixed with money.

Taught for 22 years here in EBR. The money is wasted every two years on a "new curriculum" .Each time a new curriculum in introduced the textbooks must be replaced. Have you seen the price of a new textbook? EBR blew a ton of cash putting computers in every classroom for each student. The textbooks are online but they have to be paid for. Instructional time is wasted. Many (not all)children/parents do not value education. Building new schools: new schools are nice but do we really need palaces (if someone really wants to learn they can learn from a teacher teaching in a lean to shed). Standardized testing costs a barge load of money and it is run by a monopoly ( every EBR high school student is taking (and retaking) the ACT on our dime). By the way, if you want to pass the LEAP test you can with a score of 50. On of my most prized textbooks from LSU was a 1929 Calculus textbook I bought for $2.99 and it was light years better than the current textbook. Bottom line is the money is being pipelined off to "instructional resources" and not even reaching the teachers or really helping the students. I now work in engineering/construction and it is like a vacation compared to teaching.

one quick observation is that principles and superintendents are grossly overpaid considering their education level and resumes.

not only are teachers underpaid but they are often required to buy their own supplies nowadays, which seems unfair

politically corrupt system
underpaid teachers
shitty parenting

this is how you get here

Are they counting transportation costs? That has to be much higher in the US.

Also, how do other countries handle students with disabilities? Paying a sign language interpreter for one student can drive up a district's per pupil cost. Just an example - not saying it's a waste by any means.

Schools, teachers, and the money are just one part of the equation. Parents matter. Having a father and mother who get involved with their kids' education is just as important as the other stuff.

Because that is what teachers and the bloated education administrations state constantly.

Because it goes to the bloated public school administrators.

Our system is crumbling under the fricking weight of those individuals.

3) Why do other countries get so much more bang for their bucks on primary and secondary education performance?
Multifactorial, probably.

Scruffy bets that they don’t have the glut of shitty, overpaid admin personnel along with another factor being the glut of crappy parents we have here as well.

4) Maybe the data in the OP is misleading or not telling whole story?
Not likely.

Yes they do.

I would be willing to bet they have a higher percentage than we do of students and families that value education.

The disparity between good districts and bad ones in the US probably dwarfs any other advanced nation, in no small part because of how districts are funded. Local control is so embedded here that I doubt it will ever change.

You find a place with high property values and a solid tax base and you will find good, high performing schools. It doesn't matter if it's in Texas, California, Florida, or wherever.

Per pupil average really doesn't tell you all that much and really isn't a good indicator of anything here

Because the results are widely shite, and the shitty areas get the most press, and a vocal component of educators complain about how bad they have it

Teachers pockets aren’t the ones needing to be greased.
