This is a discussion on Dan Patrick (sports show, not the politician from Texas).

I learned that Austin has the highest speed limit in the nation.. At 85 MPH.

Anyway, does anyone drive a certain MPH over the speed limit assuming the police will not stop you for going that fast?

And technically you can be stopped for going 1 MPH over the limit, but do police usually give a 10 MPH window?

Also, what is too slow? How slow do you have to go to get stopped?

85 mph is only on the toll road that leaves Austin. The rest of Austin is hell, and you maybe go 15 mph.

My little city enacted a strict 1 mph over rule.

They did that for about a month and it caused a clusterfrick. Lots and I mean lots of pissed off people.. popo thought they were going to get the Police department stormed for outrage they were causing

8 you're great, 9 you're mine for interstate. All other roads use best judgment and experience.

I've always been told +5mph on the interstate is ok, obviously exceptions for speeding up to safely pass in the passing lane

In central/north Louisiana, if you're 5 under you're at the limit, if you're at the limit you're exceeding the limit

In Texas there are no rules

No.

I know our local sheriff and he told me about 7 mph is the grace limit.

So, I drive 61 in a 55. Or 76 in a 70. Haven't been pulled over for speeding since 1997.

But thanks for posting this thread, I'll get pulled over on my way home from work.

You better make damn sure your radar guns are calibrated and have near zero uncertainty.

Set the cruise at 8 over on the interstate and you’ll never get a ticket. Set it at 9 and you won’t as long as you stay at 9 and don’t creep to 10, and even at 10 you won’t always get one.
Small towns, if it’s 25, go 25. Anything higher and you can easily go 5 over

I've been told by some cops that 8 or 9 is the magic number for most. A lot will let 10 slide but once you get to 11+ that's when they will start pulling people over. Unless you have a cop who's a dick and having a bad day and pulls people over for 5 over to flaunt his authority.

I'd like more people to get pulled over for going too slow. They cause more accidents than speeders in my opinion.

In Georgia it's 7.

GHP will not pull you over if you're doing 77 on the interstate.

78 though... BAM, superspeeder.

The usual rule of thumb is about 7 MPH in Louisiana.

The reason for it is that state law dictates that funds from tickets for going about 1-5 MPH over the limit end up in the state’s general fund. Funds from going over that end up going to the jurisdiction in question.

The intent is to discourage speed trap towns nailing people for going 1MPH over the limit, as doing so wouldn’t net them any money.

There should be no maximum speed limit. Only a minimum speed limit

Hell if I know, but I do 9mph usually. Basically keep it under 10mph over so I know I can pay the fine without being too salty if I get pulled over.
