About speed limit plus 10% except school zone (where it is strictly speed limit or below).

70 mph limit = 77
50 mph limit = 55
25 mpg limit = 27-28

Etc.

I used to haul arse everywhere but I've learned that the 5 minutes I saved really isn't that important.

On a long road trip on the interstate I will set cruise at 79 in a 70 though.

There should be no maximum speed limit. Only a minimum speed limit

I agree in theory but our licensing requirements allow way to many functional retards on the road for that

So the speed limit on the Huey P is 50mph. If there is a cop radaring on the bridge people will slam on their brakes and slow to 35 in the left lane. In my opinion THAT is who should get pulled over. They are just asking to get rear eneded but it'll be your fault if you do.

85 mph is only on the toll road that leaves Austin. The rest of Austin is hell, and you maybe go 15 mph.

it's 80 on the toll around Austin and lately they've been toning that down to 70 due to construction. annoying, but better than 35 through Austin.

i usually don't push my luck but i passed a DPS officer on 130 (the 85 mph one) at about 88 once and and he didn't get me, but he was doing about 70 so he may not have been gauging it.

i do about 30-40k miles of driving every year and generally try not to speed, but 5 mph seems to be the safe spot on Texas highways.

the ticket is usually based on % over the speed limit so it's not worth it in a small town. 35 in a 30 will ding you worse than 75 in a 70.

The usual rule of thumb is about 7 MPH in Louisiana. The reason for it is that state law dictates that funds from tickets for going about 1-5 MPH over the limit end up in the state’s general fund. Funds from going over that end up going to the jurisdiction in question. The intent is to discourage speed trap towns nailing people for going 1MPH over the limit, as doing so wouldn’t net them any money.

You really shouldn't even be able to write a ticket for under 5 mph unless the speed limit is under like 40mph. A regularly calibrated speed detection device can be off by 3%, I'm sure these little bum frick towns don't calibrate their shite regularly.

I've always been told +5mph on the interstate is ok, obviously exceptions for speeding up to safely pass in the passing lane

Most states allow you to legally speed only when passing a vehicle on a 2 lane road.
Some states say "safe and prudent manner" while Some say you can't go more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit. The passing or overtaking 'cushion' is where the myth of "10mph over the limit is okay" comes from.
This is also why going 7 or 8 over the speed limit on the Interstate is not wise in the right lane but more acceptable in the left(passing) lane.
Years ago a Texas State Trooper explained this little nugget about the Interstate when he pulled me over going 77 in a 70 in the right lane on I-45 north of Houston. He gave me an official warning but no ticket b/c I was legit approaching my exit somewhere in Montgomery County(going to the CAD office). whew.

5 over is my limit on most roads.

They ended up tossing pretty much every case.

My aunt was going 32 in a 30 and they got her, threw the case out as this was all tied into that 1mph rule.

It seemed more like a cash grab for the PD than actually getting the crime off the street.

Drove for Enterprise Holdings for over two years, regionally. Most trips over a hundred miles. 5 miles over is accepted across the board. City, towns and highways.

In normal conditions on an interstate, I set my cruise at 10 over and only stay in the left lane when passing. I haven’t had a speeding ticket since 2007.

Driving highways/back roads, I will go 60 in a 55, but once I hit the 45 mph mark or lower, I go the exact speed limit. The small towns can and will bite you in the arse, especially if they see you’re not from around there. They figure you’ll just mail in your check for going 4 mph over rather than drive all the way back out there for traffic court.

There was a law made to combat these rinky dink towns and their speed traps. Now it's like 9 mph over less and the funds from the ticket go to the state. 10 or more and the local PD collects. So it has helped a little with getting pulled over for going a few mph over. They will pretty much let you off if they do, but they use it as probable cause to pull you over just to look at you and run your info to make sure there isn't more going on.
