Walter wasnt a good man, but you enjoyed him because of his performance, combined with the writing and cinematic production of Breaking bad.
Walt is a good guy/villain combo with Walt/Heisenberg. But More villain than hero. However, I’m not interested in “oh, he’s a bad person have to root against him”. I watch him because he’s good at the game. He’s competent and sometimes ruthless. And most of his battles, he’s an underdog. A lot of times I think “how’s hes getting out of this”. And then he does talking risks and playing chess, manipulating characters.

Walt had the chance to get cancer treatment and set his family up legally had he just swallowed his pride and taken the job at Gray Matter. Instead he decided to cook meth, murder people, and ruin his entire family's lives. As overbearing has she could be in the end Skyler was right to consonantly be pissed at and not trust him.

That's the thing..and I hate to reference this..but at the end of the dark knight, when the joker talks about sanity and how it just takes a little "push".
The cancer was his push, to me the fire that was later named heisenberg was always lit, but became a wildfire. From what we know of him, he may always have been a schemer to get what he wanted.
I think he left Gretchen for Skylar, who was younger and prettier. Using the crossword puzzles he noticed as his icebreaker. He even drove a Porsche around that time, in a deleted scene. I often wondered if he regretted/resented Skylar in ways for that..but I dont see it. I think Walter really cared about her.
It's also hard to say..would he have been better at the game had he not been a legit lunatic? That's what got him there..but, 1 and a half year run compared to Gus' 20+ run,..i guess it goes back to his chemistry lessons on how rapid reactions can cause otherwise harmless substances to explode.
Beautiful frickin show.

That's like if Metallica would have come to Dave Mustaine, and offered him a job as a roadie.

Don't forget not only did she frick Ted, she gave him $600k of Walt's money that he was risking his life for.

Gemma Teller was way worse, IMO.

I never understood the hate for her. A little? Yes. But not a high level

The fact Walter has to fight drug lords, his family at home and his brother-in-law makes the show.
Add to that fighting Cancer in the middle of all that.

One of my biggest issues with her (besides those already mentioned) is that every step along the way, Walt presented her with options. Did he make mistakes - of course he did and she had a right to be upset with him at many points. But she flat out rejected all of the options Walt had to improve the family, hide the money, etc, and often made worse decisions on her own when given the opportunity (hence Ted).

I really hate you for this thread. I'm doing a rewatch currently and have the polar opposite opinion of you and had on my to-do list for today to make a thread wiht reasons why the skylar hate is way unwarranted.

Arthur's wife from The Last Kingdom out-counts Skylar.

I hated her with a passion, and her sister, too. Even if he wasn't cooking meth and trying to live out his last days the best he can, I would still think she was a bitch.

Been a while since I watched the series, but from memory she worked the car wash franchise for a while, knowing that Walt was into something really shady, and seems like she was ok with that for a while.

I was watching a few old HI episodes on Hulu and holy hell I never noticed how much Jill bitches at Tim. Constantly. Half of Tim’s shenanigans that he ends up having to apologize to Jill for don’t affect her even slightly.
