How is it a mystery? Whenever he doesn't get his way he turns into an angry a-hole who refuses to budge b/c he is overly prideful. He was probably a huge prick to Gretchen for an extended period of time which is why she left him in the first place.
Odds are he constantly rubbed people the wrong way at other job opportunities to the point he had no other option than to become a high school teacher in New Mexico.

i was always curious about this, too
i assumed he was just incredibly difficult to work with (b/c of the arrogance and god complex) and high-end chemistry jobs aren't likely too common in New Mexico and he burned all of his bridges quickly

I’m almost finished with my first watch of Sopranos, and damn AJ sucks so bad. People have already mentioned Janice as well. At least Skylar had legit reasons to act like she does, AJ is just miserable

She started off horrible and I never cared for her, but I ended up hating Walter more than anyone on that show.
