Very good idea, IMO. If you get behind early on, you will most likely stay behind and never catch up. This way, you can at least be on par with others in the 4th grade and can go from there.
Now it's just too much just "pass the kid on" BS, which in the long term never helps the child.
inb4 no one will ever move past the 3rd grade in Alabama.

Alabama could become the next state to require third grade students to pass a reading test before moving to fourth grade. The bill would require third graders to meet reading benchmarks beginning in the 2021-22 school year. The House of Representatives on Thursday agreed to a Senate amendment. The bill now goes to Republican Gov. Kay Ivey. The bill also spells out initiatives to try to boost reading scores. Those include summer reading camps and providing local and regional specialists to work with struggling students.

About 16 states demand third grade students pass a reading score threshold or repeat the grade. Supporters said statistics show students who can’t read on grade level will struggle throughout their academic careers. Opponents said the bill threatens struggling students with failure but does not adequately provide funding to help them.

I bet that reading test will be so easy, the average 6 year old could pass it.

Good. And all these people yelling there isn’t enough funding, how about you read to your kids at home like a responsible parent does?

If a kid can't read by first grade, their parents failed them.

Glad it is at the local/state level. The Feds have no business in education.
On the other hand, its Alabama. How many adults in Alabama can pass the test...

The fact that this bill had to be written is pitifully sad.

Bama recruiting is fricked

Great idea, but it doesn't fix shitty schools or teachers.

To get to 9th grade you must have a minimum of 9 teeth.

If the parents actually gave a shite it’d be amazing how competent the teachers in these failing school systems look

Mississippi already has this in place. My middle son had to take it this year but no worries these coon arse transplants are bringing up the averages in our school.

No, if the parents actually gave a shite, there’d be no failing schools.

They should drop history from elementary school and double up on math and reading.

I’ve been agreeing with a lot of your posts recently and I’m not ok with it

frick that.
If anything, civics and history need to be taught more intensely and earlier on.
The time spent on math and science isn’t the problem.
