If a kid can't rid, that's Mama fault. Unless the kid can't read because there's no electricity. That's Daddy fault.

Very good idea, IMO

really? ya think? That a law needs to be passed to address this says volumes about the horrendous state of education in the US in 2019.

Opponents said the bill threatens struggling students with failure but does not adequately provide funding to help them.

No, it threatens struggling parents with failure in a way that should wake their arse up.

I imagine this would also focus the efforts of teachers on the students most behind (or who have already needed to repeat), so don't give me any crap about resources. The kids that have been reading since 4 or 5 will be ignored for half the year while the teacher and assistant buckle down until Timmy can read a Dick and Jane.

We should do the same thing here. It’s amazing how many kids are illiterate and advancing in school.

Everyone should spend a little time in small town Alabama specifically Black Belt towns: Demopolis, Greensboro, Marion, Uniontown, Tuskegee, Selma, etc, etc. I tell people that we have third world areas of America and they don't believe me.

Alabama football will be signing more 21 year old freshmen besides Calvin Ridley in the next few decades.

A good history or social studies class even in elementary school is fundamentally a reading class or aimed at providing the basic cultural literacy in order to read.

Good. And all these people yelling there isn’t enough funding, how about you read to your kids at home like a responsible parent does?

I don't think anyone from Baton Rouge or NOLA doubt there are third world areas of America.

I bet that reading test will be so easy, the average 6 year old could pass it.

Adults in Alabama are lucky they didn't pass this sooner. And I'm lucky they can't read this message insulting them.

What Alabama is about to discover but what they probably already know is that a large amount of their population is borderline retarded or below and could easily qualify for special education.

ETA: And this is not at a specific shot at Alabama, the same goes for much of the Deep South.

Yeah right. By the time these kids graduate high school they will be 22 and much more physically mature than other college freshman.
