A good history or social studies class even in elementary school is fundamentally a reading class or aimed at providing the basic cultural literacy in order to read.
I don't have a problem eliminating some "enrichment" classes in elementary school or even some social studies classes.
But every high school should require a C grade or higher in Civics and Economics in order to graduate.

There is zero excuse for a 4th grader to not be able to read at a Harry Potter level

This is an 8th Grade Final Examination from Bullitt County Kentucky, 1912.

Damn. I don’t think Reuben Foster could pass that now much less in the third grade.

This right here. Standardized testing has killed public schools where all they worry about is getting as many students to meet the minimum.
This will just make this worse as the schools don't have time, money, or care to focus on the top students.
eta: What are they going to do with students that can't pass the 3rd grade test? Just keep them in third grade? Kick them out? Just send them to special ed which also doesn't have funding or resources?

What Alabama is about to discover but what they probably already know is that a large amount of their population is borderline retarded or below and could easily qualify for special education.
That’s not it at all. They enter school completely unprepared for the schoolwork they have to do. They fall behind immediately. By second or third grade, schools take the easy way out and identify these kids as having a learning disability. They then fall into the SPED system, which creates and enables learned helplessness. They get passed along for doing nothing. When they get to high school, they either drop out or get a certificate.

I bet that reading test will be so easy, the average 6 year old could pass it.

That’s a solid test, especially the civics part.

Segregate the classes amongst high achievers, average, and below average. Let me ache class be taught at the pace best suited for the students.

What did we do in the past? Yes hold them back. Yes send them to special ed schools. Yes make them take summer school.
Why is it so bad to make people meet a minimum standard?

90% of American adults wouldn’t pass the civics part.
70% would shite themselves trying to define democracy and republic in the same question.

My 4 year old who has not been given any formal reading training yet, can read cat in the hat books by himself, because we sit with him damn near every day and help him.
Amazing isn't it?

Does a child of average or above average intelligence really need that much preparation? America was producing intelligent individuals well before the advent of Kindergarten or Pre-Kindergarten, and if anything I would say these institutions are more detrimental as children are placed in maladaptive situations.
A child falls behind because they are of a lower intelligence than the average.
Continue to believe the myths if you want to.
