ABC News saying 16 religious statues had been removed from the Cathedral for cleaning... making those statues very, very fortunate

I'm surprised that much scaffolding is still intact.

Did I just hear correctly on the CBSN stream that it held the crown of thorns and a nail from the crucifixion of Jesus there?

100% bullshite, despite whatever they claim.

This is a horrific loss for Western civilization, but jesus's original crown of thorns is not a) in human possession and b) lying around on display at Notre Dame. There is no known location for it and about two dozen churches, if not more, claim to have it. Like someone else said, if it exists, it would be in a nuke proof case locked away somewhere so something like this doesn't get to it.

It was like 6:30 in the evening, and the French aren't known for their long work hours.

That's a good point. This might have been something left unattended at the end of the work day

Or, someone (arsonist) could have slipped in the back door when no one was around

Too early to credit/discredit either theory.

News is reporting that firefighters are going inside trying to save what they can as far as artwork, and I would assume relics, etc.

Hopefully they aren't taking too many risks with lives, but maybe they can save some of it.

Pretty crazy to think it survived 2 invasions during WWII but went down due to a possible construction incident

Imagine if that's the cause, if you were the baw that dropped the cigarette or was running the saw that burnt this place down.

Especially if word gets out.

Just playing devils advocate

No “side” is 100% at the moment.

Construction on site? Must be construction accident
Serial church arsonry recent? Must be foul play

Could be either. Or maybe someone knocked over a candle. Who knows at this point. But you can’t completely rule out any particular cause yet

Honest question:

What will happen to the worker who caused this?

He will be fired obviously

But will the govt offer him protection?

Watching on BBC and there's a little fire in one of the bell towers from their camera. They are blasting it with the hose at least, trying to put it out.

This is terrible news and so hard to watch.

Some of us are lucky to have visited. It's sad our children won't get to see it in all its glory.

The North and South ones area probably already gone.

The West one between the two front towers has a chance of surviving.
