I have a job opportunity in McKinney. Will be moving with a wife and a four year old. Any areas to avoid? Housing and school outlooks?

Congratulations! Where are you moving from? There a bunch of posters here with good knowledge of the Dallas suburb areas. Hope your move goes smoothly.

McKinney is a very nice area but pretty far from Dallas, basically as far as Fort Worth is, but in the northeast direction. The housing is much more affordable compared to Dallas proper, and the schools are better. McKinney isn’t a bad place to raise a family overall.

It's very decent, live on a golf course and you'll be set.

It’s your typical Texas suburb. Good public schools, lots of chain malls and 200-500k houses

Couldn’t find a job in Louisiana?

It's the third fastest growing city in the united states.

I live in Mckinney
Its clean
Good roads and roads planning
good schools
If you live on the west side you can live and Mckinney but be in Frisco ISD.
Id say its a good place to live and raise a family.

Tell me who you would have voted for first before I give you any info. Puto or Ted?

One of our best friends lives there with her husband and kids.
Nice community. It would suck if you have to drive into Dallas proper daily.
Wife teaches in McKinney (no pics of wife). Husband (no pics of husband, sorry ladies) works at Texas Instruments just inside the 635 loop and he is constantly complaining of traffic on 75, to the point where his boss now lets him work from a home on Mondays and Fridays.
they fixed up their downtown area which is ok but seems kinda fake.
People always say NOLA is a great place to visit and a terrible place to live. I would say McKinney is a great place to live and a terrible place to visit - unless you are simply using it as a base to visit other places in the MetroPlex.

Typical suburb. A little cookie cutter, but less than others. It has a really cool old downtown square with a ton of local businesses. Upper middle class, safe, great schools, etc.

I live in Collin County and you are making a great choice. If your job is in McKinney, you really have a few options to live.
McKinney West of 75 - If living in McKinney, you really want to be West of US 75. East is lower income. West schools are better, but check the school boundries. Some West homes go East for school.
Allen - Just South on US75. Smaller town, but has better elementary schools. I do not know the rankings now, but just a year or two ago they had several ranked in the top 10 for the State and one ranked in the national top 25. I have lived in Allen before and would choose it over McKinney everyday.
Frisco - McKinney is the county seat, but Frisco is trying to knock it off for everything else. Frisco is growing and might be the wealthiest city in the county now. They have really good schools and about everything else there including soon the PGA headquarters. MLS soccer, minor league baseball, home of Dallas Cowboys practice, etc. is all there. Frisco can feel crowded, look carefully when buying a house.
Plano - Once a suburb star, Plano is dated. Most development is old, especially East and Central. Any new development in Plano is far West which would make it the longest drive to McKinney. Stay away from East and most of Central Plano.
Country options - Anna and Melissa - These are North on US75 and going to feel a lot more country. Cheaper homes and more land, but civilization is creeping North constantly. Drive is not bad into McKinney, but you will feel far from everything. Careful around there, the dump is located up there and depending on wind patters, well you know .
You are actually rich option - Fairview and Lucas - Most homes here are 1 acre and up. This also means you should expect to pay well over $500,000. Price per sq/ft is around $180 in fairview. Lovejoy (their school district) schools are solid and some surrounding people actually pay $10,000+ to send their kids to these public schools.
There is probably not a better County to raise a family in Texas, so you really lucked up. It is not going to be as glamorous as NY, LA, SF or Baton Rouge, but it is a very nice place to live. Your kid and any future kids will have a ton of opportunities in education and athletics.

Used to be a big bitch working at the local SPCA there. She'll trade you a pet neutering/spaying if you eat her puss.
ETA: So I heard from a friend.

My Office is in McKinney, it's nice and was rated #1 place to live in the US by some magazine a few years ago. We live a little south and love it.
The area is growing like crazy.
Cost of living is probably not higher than anywhere else, we have no state income tax but the property taxes are nuts. If you have kids it's worth it though due to the top notch school systems.
It's also a real safe place with little to no crime
Some of my coworkers live in Celina, Melissa, Anna if you are looking for a home these areas are all new and nice.

My son will also be moving there soon. You wouldn't by chance be going to work for Raytheon?

Top relocation area in the country. shite ton of Louisiana folk. Top school district. There’s a Cheaper Than Dirt gun store. 4-5 major lakes within an hour’s drive. Collin County is a dry county but a ten minute drive to the nearest alcohol. Hospitals and clinics are great.
