They’re all over the Caribbean islands. Brand new models all with small Diesel engines.

Neighbors had a mid-80's el camino, it was immaculate but had the anemic 305 in it. They dropped a ZZ3 crate engine in it and built a TH400 for it. I think they still have it but it's been parked up for years now, one of those someday projects that will never get done now.

My dad still has an old 87 Isuzu Pup that is still running with 322k.
The auto shop I worked while in college in the 80's used one for a shop vehicle. Thing would chirp the tires going into 3rd gear and could stand still and burn the rubber completely off the tires in 1st. But high winds made the thing scary to take on more than city roads it was so light.

My best friend from high school has his GF's 59 El Camino, it came with a I6 235 and a Powerglide. We built a warmed over 327 and left the 'glide in it. Not remotely fast but just enough to make it a good daily.
No his but his is the same color

Growing up, one of our neighbors had a long bed Isuzu Pup. It was small and efficient but could haul a sizable amount. And it was easy to load because it was so low to the ground.
I wonder if Toyota will ever offer a hybrid Tacoma? I think that'd save more money than a diesel.

Like the 2.8L 4cyl Colorado or Canyon?

Import tariffs on light trucks are ridiculous.

No, which is why they don't offer them. This thread will be full of people saying they would though.

Edit:
Let me rephrase: no one will BUY a compact truck.

I considered a Tacoma before i bought my F150 but once you all all the options to the Tacoma it was just as much as the F150. Plus the gas mileage was the same too. Someone does need to come out with a basic small truck again. 4 cylinder, manual etc. oh and my first vehicle was a ranger and I drove it well over 140,000 Miles.

Diesel is gaining in popularity. For the first time in a while you can buy a half ton diesel. I think they would be far more popular if it weren’t for the emissions standards. It takes away a bit of the benefit you get with the diesel and the regen cycle with DEF destroys my average MPG.
I drive a Titan XD with the Cummins Turbo Diesel. I love it, but will love it even more once the warranty goes away at 100,000 miles and can make the emissions crap go away.

The Duramax powered Colorado and canyon are awesome trucks, but they are not compact. Those are mid sized rigs that are as large as a 1990s f-150.

loved the S-10 from the mid 90's.
I still have a 2003 one for light work on the farm. Has a 4.3L in it too.

It would hurt the gas truck industry.
A 4 cyclinder diesel truck would be amazing.
A Toyota hilux would probably out live you

No. Why diesel? You're not going to be towing anything with a 4 so why the need for diesel.
Compact trucks sold like hotcakes to latino dry wall finishers and white trash framers and roofers back in the housing boom of the 80's here in FL. Don't see why they wouldn't sell now. Mitsubishi Raider was the last of the true construction worker personal pickups. Legit firms use full size but day laborers are all about the Mazda B2000 all gas all the time.
You won't be winning any dick swinging contests with 250's rolling coal but you can do some projects around the house easier than if you had an SUV.

I really would love for someone to make compact pickups again, diesel or not. Something the size of the old S10 or 90s Ranger.
The “mid size” pickups of today would be full size even just 20 years ago. It sucks there’s no option for a compact pickup other than to buy used, which are getting older and rarer, but that’s what I’ll continue doing until they start making them again.
Bring back the late 90’s Dakotas. You still see some on the road today. In fact my brother in law still uses a 98 V8 Dakota as his daily driver. Just hit 278k miles on it! It’s a midsized truck that can still do all the “truck stuff” typical owners need.
