In the 80's and early 90's most people could get a 4x2 single cab Toyota, Mazda, Isuzu, Dodge D50, Mitsubishi, Nissan formally Datsun, S10, and Ford Ranger under $8,000 new. These were plain trucks no power windows or locks, vinyl seat, vinyl floor, 4 speed or 5 speed, 4 cylinder, ac/heat, and basic small tires.

I had friends get to the Toyota lot at 7 am waiting for the dealer to open on delivery day to buy a single cab truck with ac/heat and bumper for $4,995 brand new. The note was around $99 a month with taxes & fees paid at time of delivery.

A new base price full-size truck ran about $11,000 to $15,000 depending on automatic or manual Transmission and engine size in 4x2.

You had a huge difference in price, so most people went the small compact truck route if you were limited on income and wanted a reliable vehicle.

Today a midsize truck cost almost the same as a full-size truck. Unless you are looking for a small truck cost wise the full-size truck is a better bargain.

If I remember right, those trucks were clones of the Nissan's at that time........or maybe it was a Ford clone.

$35K minimum.

Although I guess that is where we are now. The "affordable" compacts are still pushing 40 grand.

Full sized pickups are 50-60 thousand easily.

I think it's a 3.0L V6 diesel from VM, which is a reputable Italian diesel engine company.

Auto manufactures have ti found ways to meet gov fuel standards and still give the american yruck buyer a big arse truck.

Plus ford had had success with the 6 turbo.
