I’m in my mid-30’s and growing up as kid it seemed everyone squirrel hunted. We always squirrel hunted the entire month of October and then when deer/ duck season closed we were back to squirrel hunting with a rat terrier we had growing up. We had great times.

Admittedly I don’t squirrel hunt as much as I used but I may get back into it next year instead of bow hunting.

Why don’t as many people squirrel hunt anymore? My guess is all over Louisiana most land that was once hardwoods are now pine plantations and when I was a kid it was normal to knock on someone’s door and ask permission to squirrel.

Squirrels are damn good eating too.

Just my 2 cents

Squirrel and rabbit aren’t “cool” to hunt anymore.

My wife doesn’t like to eat squirrel or rabbit

Otherwise I’d pile them up big time. She likes deer. I have a tough time getting a deer every year

I do it when it’s not deer season. I’m pretty sure my grandpa killed every rabbit on the place but there’s still some squirrels.

Just had my best squirrel season in a long time, actually. It used to be family tradition to skip school on Friday for opening weekend.

I’d say it’s still fairly popular, you just don’t have people post about killing a pile of them like you would with ducks or a trophy buck.

I still squirrel hunt but be careful what you wish for about it being popular again. Once it becomes cool to post pics on instagram of squirrels, hunters will want more regulations on what size squirrels you can kill.

small game hunting is WAY MORE fun than sitting in a deer stand - imo.

Like you said it is mostly access and society. When I was in High School we used to always look to schedule shop (2 hours) as our first class. At least twice a week we would skip class to go squirrel hunting and all was cool as long as we shared the kill with the shop teacher. But that was also when we would drive to school with a shotgun and a riffle in the back window of the truck, no one freaked out and no one stole the damn thing.
.
Times have changed, there are fewer places to hunt, it's not socially acceptable in many circles, etc. etc.
.
I still love to squirrel hunt just don't have a place to go.

I love squirrel hunting and enjoy it more than duck hunting these days. No drama involved when hunting squirrels. Plus, they taste better than duck and you don't have to put up with a$$holes.

I just kinda lost interest in it,must be my age(68).Started when I was 10 and squirrel hunted a lot until last 2-3 years.I still deer hunt but not as hard as I used to.No more Saline,Tensas. My favorite was rabbit hunting, did that about 25 years, had my own dogs 20 years.I would run my dogs good bit in the summer and then hunt hard Jan.,Feb.I never got too excited about squirrel hunting with dogs.
I probably would go squirrel hunting if I could get my grandsons interested.About all they want to do is play video games.I took my stepsons quite a bit when they were kids but they never caught the bug.
Funny the way it works,my dad never cared much for hunting but I was crazy about it.My dad would go once or twice a year and would usually come back with his hunting vest full of pecans,no squirrels.

Yeah I killed a big one during the holidays. The final green measurement on the skull was 1-3/16 inches wide and 2 9/16 inches long. Adding these two gave it a final green score of 3 and 3/4 inches. The minimum score to qualify for the Badenov and Fatale record book is 3-1/2", so even accounting for the shrinkage that will happen as it dries, this squirrel should easily make the record book.

Early season we’d hunt squirrel hunt without our dog but in February he came with us every time. That dog was amazing. Hardly every lost a squirrel once he got on them. He kept his eyes in the trees. Good Times.

Also, a poster above mentioned enjoying squirrel hunting more than duck hunting. I was the same way and with the duck hunting in Louisiana declining I’m more than happy to spend that time squirrel hunting when I’m not deer hunting.

Poster made great points about not having to deal with assholes like you do when you duck hunt and it’s not expensive.

I try not to squirrel hunt our place in Tensas because I don’t want to spook our deer but still make a couple hunts a year. I may start squirrel hunting Tunica. My older brother and I made a squirrel hunt there about 7 years ago and we both limited out in under an hour.
