The Democrat headquarters downtown has vote YES on #2 signs in the front window. That’s all you need to know on how to vote for that one.

2. Yes. While I don't think we use the Death Penalty enough, I certainly want there to be a high standard for when we do. More than that though this bill also requires that an acquittal be unanimous as well and that helped move me from No to Yes.

You do realize the death penalty in Louisiana requires a unanimous 12-0 decision? Read a book and change your vote back to NO.

I’m a big NO on 2. Why make it easier for one person to impose their will on a jury. As several people I know have pointed out this will take away the leverage of the DAs. We have a crime problem and we’re considering this ???

Locking up people is a big deal and should be treated with the highest standard of scrutiny

You'd think that but it has a lot of conservative support behind it.

I'm OK with felons running for office after their sentence is complete.

3 reasons:

-at some point we have be able to say whether you debt is paid or not. When you keep tacking on more and more punishment it makes it impossible for a fresh start.

-we have some bullshite felony statues and some bullshite prosecutions, some of which are done purley for politics (Dinesh Desouza and scooter Libby). They can be used as a weapon to take out political opponents.

-the 'non-felons' in office are often bigger crooks than the felons anyway.

Coming from me, this may be shocking to some.

Yeah amendment 7 is per parish. I'll be voting yes.

And I agree with TrueTiger, once a person has paid their debt to society in the form of a prison sentence I have no problem with them running for office. If you can't beat a convicted felon in a campaign I'm not sure I want you elected anyway.

No. 2- no. That law will suck for east Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Orleans, etc... you have a bunch of citizens who hate the judicial system. It will only take one person to let a quilts person walk on a felony. As a rule, I oppose and law offered by Jp morel.

I wonder how in the heck those 48 other states ever get those convictions? And just because a juror might not convict for the charged offense, he might be willing to convict for a lesser included offense.

Louisiana Amendment 5, Special Assessment for Homes in Trusts Amendment

quote:
A "yes" vote supports allowing special assessments on a home in trust for a resident who is the settlor of the trust and is a disabled veteran or the surviving spouse of a person who died while performing their duties as a first responder, active duty member of the military, law enforcement officer, or fire protection officer.

While I truly appreciate the careers/services these people affected have chosen, their situations/lives are no more special than other tax payers in similar circumstances.

If we're feeling this charitable, let's do it for all disabled people and surviving spouses of a person who died. In general, the financial difficulties for these spouses to overcome are no different.

These bills real purpose are to allow the politicians that voted for and sponsored them, to add "altruism" and "patriotism" to their resume, plastering on their mailouts, stars & stripes, while sticking it to the American taxpayers. Rinse. Repeat.

I have no idea why I had the Death Penalty stuck in my head on that one. I'll take your advice and go read a book though if you'll take mine and go frick yourself.

Deal?

The same reason they can't vote or buy alcohol

So why shouldn’t they be allowed to do these things? I just want to hear your thoughts. For the record, there are lots of people who are above the age of majority but still minors for gambling and buying alcohol. Why do you believe those younger than 21 must not be permitted to gamble?

But we do trust them to get married, buy property, open a credit card, work in power plants and refineries, handle high explosives, build pipelines, drive 18-wheelers, serve in the armed forces, and take on tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt?

In other words, they are asking the residents if they want to raise their taxes.
