Everyone hears him.
A center frequency hands you to a local frequency.
They are all on the same frequency at that point.
You can listen to two radios at once. So the pilots hear a lot.
You have ground, approach, departure and ATC in larger areas.

I am guessing Rich found out there were more that two bakers in the bakery. By looking at the wedding picture, he looks like he could have some craziness about him. While I am very glad this did not turn out worse than it did, this is the best “ Sometimes you’ve gotta say WTF!!!” moment ever.

frick this guy and anyone celebrating him. If he wanted to kill him self, he should have put a bullet in his head in his home. Instead, he endangers the lives and property of others, along with wasting the resources of the local fire and law enforcement.

On top of the fact he endangered a lot of people, he stole and destroyed an aircraft. At what point did we become OK with stealing and destruction of property?

Yep. Scrambling those two F-15s costed tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars in jet fuel and man hours also.

Look, I get what you're saying but I get far more mad at the clowns who attempt suicide by parking on the train tracks. They know damn well other people are likely to die when the train derails and DGAF.
This could have ended far worse but dude was obviously out for a joyride before going out in a blaze of glory. At no point did it appear he intended to kill anyone but himself.
A great waste of time and money, for sure. Aviation industry will have to figure out some way to keep from happening again. But dude was living the dream. You know tons of people would love to have a joyride like that. What's amazing is that they let him stay in the air as long as they did. Impressive restraint by those F-15 pilots.
Fortunately they put out the fire on the island last night without loss of any homes or further life beyond the hijacker.

I'd bet good money scrambling those jets was cheaper in this situation then it was in an actual practice mission.
Frick the guy for destroying the airplane, but to a degree I can assure you we should have learned a lot from what happened and it tested NORAD well.

Another question I'd have, is that is there no safety measure to prevent someone other than the pilots from taking off?
I'm assuming the plane was running and ready to go when he took it over? Almost seems like the pilots should have the door locked to the cockpit if they are not inside? Maybe they do, I don't know. I guess it also makes sense to allow custodians in the cockpit.
Will be interesting what the airlines learn from this.
Eta: I mean it's crazy to think this guy un chalked the plane, removed the ramp, closed the doors, etc. without someone noticing? Could someone not have just chaulked the wheels back and prevented all of this?

They probably had orders not to splash him over populated areas unless he showed a direct threat to something.
I’d he curious to know what their orders were as far as when they would have been authorized to drop him.
