Completely different.

Daily training missions do not equal real world scrambles.

Ok, would you rather they go about their normal training flights, or answer the call of duty? What's the difference in costs?

?

I would rather that a suicidal maniac doesn’t steal a plane and force two F-15s to take off and intercept him.

That was one extra two-ship that didn’t have to launch dude. It’s not like a training sortie got cancelled because the alert fighters had to fly today.

Would of been cool if the fighter did a barrel roll.

It's a real world exercise, so it can be useful for future experience. Think about it for a second.

Gee wish I would have thought about that...

All I’m saying is that there is a “difference in cost”

You asked what the difference in cost is... I’m telling you there is one. That mission wasn’t going to happen regardless.

Additionally, there are more lives impacted negatively by what he did then you realize.

I guess no information yet as to why he would suddenly decide to kill himself?

He had a hot wife. First guess is that they were having trouble.

He gave us a very inexpensive lesson in the massive security breach we have at that airport and one can assume at many airports around the country.

He w/o a 35 million dollar aircraft. That was expensive, but this was a good exercise and will only help emergency readiness in the future. But as you stated, a security issue that has always existed, will be examined in further detail now. Some folks around here don't understand.

Inexpensive in lives lost versus crashing the plane into the nearest skyscraper.

Maybe, but that’s far from a given.

I’m not an expert on operational readiness for fighter squadrons, but I do know that training is very specific and very focused. A pilot has to do “X” flights to be qualified for, say, scramble/intercept missions and since these guys were on alert, they were certainly mission ready.

I’m not at all certain that taking off and following this guy for half an hour before they returned to base made them materially better pilots.

Puddle jumper eh? He did a pretty good barrel roll before taking her down the briny deep. Poor wife, he left his estate on the hook for the cost of that airplane (like $ 32 million). Ouch!

That is the sole function of these pilots stationed in Oregon. They are the rapid response for any incidents up and down the west coast. They have been scrambled several times to take care of rogue aircraft. They actually are allowed to break the sound barrier heading up from Portland. The planes are always full of gas and loaded with weapons to deal with any threat.

Sole function? Not so much.

All the security measures in the world wont matter if there is no way to determine that the pilots and other personal working in and around the aircraft are mentally stable, or as in this case has the propensity to become instable in the future, it is a problem that will not be solved for a long time.
