"there are a lot of actors who could play 007 once Daniel Craig retires from the role he despises: Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender (even though he's Irish), Tom Hiddleston (of Hiddleswift fame), David Oyelowo (who actually voices the character in the audiobooks). Hell, even controversially-mustached human man Henry Cavill thinks he has what it takes.

But there's only one actor who should be the next James Bond, and that's Idris Elba."

I like Idris Elba but if they don't stick to Fleming's description of Bond, I won't be watching it

Why force a black man into the role? Especially Idris. He's 45 and Craig is 50.

Dont they usually try to get somebody who can stay in the role for 10+ years?

Gratned, this doesnt bother me nearly as much as them using Idris as Roland in the Gunslinger

I havent read any of the Bond novels, but I doubt his race affects the plot that much.

In the Dark Tower Series it does have an effect (of course the abortion that was the movie didnt really address any of it so that didnt matter)

While we're at it, can we make Superman black? Will Idris be too busy playing Bond to do this?

I like Elba, and don't have a problem with picking him as the next Bond except for the fact that he is a little long in the tooth for that role. I would figure they would want to go younger.

Odd choice, especially when you have a younger incredibly established actor like Tom Hiddleston who is perfect for the role.

Who cares . . . ain't my dime.

The same thing that happened to Ghostbusters (and even SW) will happen again - people will either lose or not make as much money as they could have. People don't like major changes to beloved franchises. Period. It has been proved time and again.

We have a close exception - Ocean's 8 - it did fairly well but with reshoots and marketing cost, it didn't make nearly as much as it could have. And it doesn't really hold the same nostalgia as a long-standing franchise.

Three Stupidest Arguments People Have for the New James Bond

quote:

This is a genuinely wild one - people who are trying to use the CANONICAL LORE of James Bond to poo-poo ANY kind of choice. For one, the Bond films have only the loosest sense of continuity and lore imaginable even within themselves. For one, if this is supposed to be the SAME INDIVIDUAL throughout the films, he's over 100 years old at this point. Even the idea that each Bond is a 'reboot' is questionable, since there's bizarre bits of continuity BETWEEN actors - like Roger Moore's Bond visiting the grave of his deceased wife (from the George Lazenby Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service) or the increasingly strange choice (but one I do like a lot) of having Judi Dench serve as M for both Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, with no real explanation as to what was happening. The point is - lore and continuity don't actually matter between these movies. It's all arbitrary. Get over it.

But to go back to THIS weird argument - James Bond being canonically Caucasian in the Ian Fleming novels. Well, if you're SO CONCERNED with how James Bond was portrayed in the novels, then you should also demand Bond:

Be a brutish, violent drunk (instead of a smooth cool operator)
Have a big scar on his cheek
Look "cruel" (a term repeatedly used to describe his looks)
Be a drug addict (he would abuse methamphetamines regularly)

So they’ll shoeshorn a black actor in a role that wasn’t made for him, instead of finding the best actor.

Ask The Dark Tower how that worked.

Because it's time?

Nowadays that's usually the reason blacks are chosen for things they've never done before.

Because it's time.

Maybe Tom Hardy can play black panther in the next marvel movie. It's time.
