what is that new modern building next to the bridge on the old pier?
Water Campus. It's a research facility where they model the entire Mississippi River and delta system in order to explore coastal erosion, water diversion projects, dredging, flood protection, etc.
It's home to the Water Institute of the Gulf and is part of a much larger complex that is taking up that whole area just south of the bridge.
It's also one of a series of developments that were supposed to (along with the abandoned LSU Tram project) were going to gentrify Nicholson between LSU and downtown along with the River House, River District, Nicholson Gateway, etc.

gotcha, everytime I'm in town for the last few years I've noted those old ranch houses disappearing on the river side of Nicholson.

They've been renovating and expanding the Gardere Sewer plant so they can eventually shut down the central plant (the one on River Road across the train tracks from Magnolia Mound. Once that stench is gone, it will really bring the property values back up. If they can gentrify those areas surrounding downtown that separate it from campus and desirable areas in the Garden District and Mid City, it would really boost the city's image and help with the crime problems in the affluent neighborhoods.

Centroplex. Sounds better anyway.

Are y'all telling me the Sans Souci is gone!

This phenomenon occurs everywhere.
For instance, the Green Bridge leading into da Parish is still called the Green Bridge even though it is now grey.
There is even a wikipedia page entitled ‘’the Green Bridge’’.
I’m not from Baton Rouge, but I do know that the venue where I saw KISS in 1978 will always be the Centroplex to me.

Can't put my finger on the old school name for Scottlandville.
It'll come to me.
It'll come to me.

Just to help your memory, it was December of 1978.

You mean they have other names???
Posted on 3/10/18 at 9:57 pm to theantiquetiger
Ascension Parish does this too. Everyone familiar with Hwy 42 knows "the street where the concrete man used to be."
Posted on 3/10/18 at 10:02 pm to theantiquetiger
Absolutely. Hell my wife still calls the refrigerator an ice box.

Centroplex by any other name...

They still use Marchand's as a landmark and that restaurant's been closed for 20 years.

I was there. 3 years old. I actually remember seeing the big fire balls on stage and my mylar balloon my dad got me.

What was your dad thinking bringing you at 3 years old? I went to see them in '77 at the Centroplex and I was in the 8th grade. I believe it was Sept of '77. Anyway it was wild when the front doors got smashed with the crowd pushing to get in. First time somebody ever offered me pot. No, I didn't smoke. Didn't matter because I got a contact high anyway! Glory days!!
