Given the circumstances Miles did have an impressive 2005 season. No reason to denigrate those accomplishments because of Wade's success. We were not exactly a championship caliber team in 2004.

I admit—and I loved Miles in his early years—that in the back of my mind was this nagging thought after 2006: how the hell does a team with 4 first round draft picks, including the overall number one, not win the NC?

That was the beginning of the elephant that’s been in the room for years—how does this team go .500 in shite, irrelevant bowls while putting more talent in the NFL than even Alabama?

And in 2005, that train could have easily been derailed. First game of the season was postponed. Second game of the season was moved from BR to Arizona. Didn't play another game for over two weeks and played the remaining 11 games with no bye week.

All while having to deal with players who lost homes, had family and jazz legends living in their apartments, etc. And all he did was go 11-1 and play for an SEC Championship.

It was one hell of a coaching job.

He's done a great job in his first year given the circumstances as well.

I always wondered how Saban would have handled all the “clutter” in 2005. Dude would’ve lost his mind.

Wade assembling this roster and squeezing as much as he has out of it is impressive.

This is such bullshite. He was an eyelash or two away from winning two more.

The kick was good, and one tackle away from repeating as west champs.

Only LSU fans shite on a national title, pathetic.

Love Wade. Really excited about the future.

But I'm going with Miles. Too many of you are thinking of today's Saban vs the 12/25/04 Saban. Remember his last team was 9-3 and pulled 3 out late against dinky competition, Oregon State,Troy and Ole Miss.To think "anyone" could go 11-2 with that team is crazy. Saban sure didn't in '04

But Les doesn't get nearly enough for guiding the team through Katrina. Can you imagine the morale of the team if Saban had still be coach in 2005? Then throw in Rita and the OT loss to Tennessee. Didn't lose again until the SECCG. If Saban had been coach with his insensitivity and devoid of compassion, that team might have struggled to have been 6-5.

Les.

Would love to know your thoughts on Orgeron if 3 go in the first of this year's draft like projected.

really talented teams come up short all the time. lotta ppl feel like Bobby Bowden should have gotten more NCs.

back to 06 LSU in particular, their 2 losses in 06 were on the road, one to the national champ, and the other to an 11-2 Auburn team that actually beat the national champ. we were probably 1 play away from beating Auburn, and not that far off from beating UF (remember that drive that ended with the QB-center fumble on their 1 ). we win one of those and we're probably champs.

sometimes you get the breaks (see 07), sometimes you don't.

Wade was hired to turn a bad program around and is doing more with less. I can't wait to see how he does with top talent.

Miles was brought in to maintain a top notch program, and he did it well for almost a decade.

The situations are incomparable; but I'd give a slight edge to Wade.

They would have been on the outside looking in even if they had been undefeated that year. Texas and USC were undefeated and that was the game most wanted all year long. Going 10-1 in the regular season, winning the west and beating Miami in a bowl game with all the distractions of Katrina was remarkable. Miles does not get enough credit for his early years here.

Will Wade is the smartest, most competent coach we've had on staff since Nick Saban.

Ask Ohio State that question. They may not have had the #1 overall in 2006, but they had the Heisman Trophy winner and a number of first and second rounders on that team.

I’ve never understood the hatred Miles got for this game. Given the circumstances, it is probably the most easily forgivable loss in his tenure.

Though fatigue played a part in that loss, it was Miles' decision to sit on the lead that cost us that game (and contributed to the fatigue.) Miles playing his cards close to his vest was a recurring theme during his tenure at LSU. That and meddling with his OC's play calling.

Such a weird game. That fumble was right after a bogus holding call negated a Hester TD. Then Early nearly pulled a Xavier Carter, then the jump pass.

My memory must be failing me. I don't remember ANY year Miles did even a good year of coaching . His present job is pretty self explanatory as to his coaching ability .

Strange you didn't use a more level comparison with Wade to Saban 2000, who also inherited a losing program.

The difference in number of games makes it hard to compare coaches of the 2 sports anyway, as you just don't have near the chances to evolve and correct with fewer games in football.

I guess I'll need to see at least a finals appearance in the next 5 years or so before crowning Wade a better coach than Miles or Saban.
