After more than five months of searching for a new site for BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, the BREC administration is leaning towards its own Airline Highway Park, better known as the Baton Rouge fairgrounds, according to several BREC Commissioners who have met with the administration on the issue.

quote:

BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight took the site off the table after the park partially flooded in August 2016. In recent months, however, the administration has revisited the idea and determined there’s enough property on the site that didn’t flood to build a zoo there.

“I think it’s a great location,” says Commissioner Larry Selders. “It’s visible. It’s not far from the interstate and it wouldn’t cost the taxpayers anything to buy the land.”

quote:

Opponents of the idea, however, say moving the zoo out of north Baton Rouge would deliver a devastating blow to the area’s economy, and that improving the zoo at its current location would be less costly and would boost flagging attendance.

A stone's throw from Prairieville - about as far from its current location that you can get while still in East Baton Rouge. This is sure to get Gravy and Chauna fired up, although it's a short ride for Gravy from his momma's house.

That's honestly not a bad place. Plenty of room to expand and easy access to what is probably close to the center of population for the region.

If I'm not mistaken, BREC is going to replace the old zoo with a very elaborate park with kayaking and athletic facilities.

BREC's annual budget is already around $100 million.

They will get a lot of donors and sponsors like they did with the Children's Museum.

Look for the "Raising Cane's Tiger Exhibit".

They're going to need A LOT of dirt to get that area high enough to avoid major flooding issues. I'm not a big fan of that site. While it's much closer to students from Ascension and Livingston Parish, I would prefer it to be closer to LSU and Downtown, since the LSU Vet School's equipment is utilized frequently in caring for large animals at the zoo.

There aren't many better free entertainment options in the area than watching black girls roll kayaks and flip the frick out in the pond at Greenwood park.

Is there other land available for a zoo closer to downtown?

I read that the area by Forest Community Park was also being considered, but wasn't large enough. They apparently want a pretty big arse zoo.
