List of State Budgets

The state just isn't spending it right. There is NO excuse for underfunded schools/universities, poor roads, etc.

As a comparison, Georgia - with double the population of Louisiana has a state budget of $23 billion. UGA and Georgia Tech aren't hurting for money and Georgia has a much better infrastructure.

La legislature really needs to get their shite together...first stop should be drastically REDUCING the # of 4 year colleges/convert the poorest preforming "universities" to technical trade schools !
IF the powers that be cannot/will not DEFINE the main budgetary issues....HOW, can they solve them ? Problem is 2 fold, party politics and elected "officials" that are far more concerned with their own re-election than with what is in the best interests of the state !

Louisiana is the original welfare state. We have almost as many state employees as Pennsylvania. Let that sink in.

Pretty sure the LA amount includes Federal while Georgia one excludes Federal sources.

ETA: this is in fact the case. According to the cited sources, Georgia budget state funds is $23.7 and total budget is $47.5 million. Louisiana budget is $17.6 state funds and $29.2 total.

That changes things some, but it still means that Louisiana spends 33% more per citizen with far less to show for it.

Remember: Louisiana centralizes more of its government and funding at the state level than any other state. A huge chunk of that budget goes to local schools and their employee pensions. Everything in the state is run from, and funded from, Baton Rouge rather than relying on local county taxes.

If you were to add up the combined state and local government budgets for those two states, Georgia would dwarf Louisiana because they tax and spend FAR more at the municipal and county level.

Louisiana vs Georgia budget, I've heard this argument before. Georgia roughly has twice the amount of people that Louisiana does. However Louisiana has the same or more number of state government employees. You tell me where the proplem is.

Like most governments, and people in general, it's a spending problem not an income problem.
