I’ve got a 50mm on my main deer rifle (.30 06) and like the field of view a lot. That being said I just bought a 42mm to put on a light weight rifle to keep the weight down.

if buying a new scope, go with the 30mm tube though. So much better

I use 40s. The 50 may make a difference if you are hunting outside of legal shooting hours. When you can’t see to shoot from a 40, time to pack it up and head in.

Neither.

My '06 has a 36mm and my .30-30 has a 32mm

I've never found either of them lacking for light gathering or field of view during legal shooting hours. The 36mm is a leupold vx-3i and is spectacular.

With shooting time ending 30 minutes after sundown a big telescope is a waste, even in the swamp on a cloudy evening.

I refuse to use anything less than 60mm....With little scope nutz hanging off it.

My main rifle has a 50. I like the larger FOV on it. Other rifles are 40 or 32

I have a 36 and a 32, both Leopold. They have always been enough during legal hours, after that I need a headlight.

My Vortex has a 56. I do worry though because I know you want the scope closer to the barrel. Would a smaller one help with that?

50 unless I’m going for a light weight build.
