40. I don’t care for a hug telescope on top of my rifles.

40mm here, no need for more where I'm at. I'm MOA at 400 in calm settings, but don't shoot game past 300. The difference in 40mm to 50mm at those ranges doesn't mean dick at those distances and in low light situations. Quality of glass is way more important.

50mm Cabela’s/Meopta. 4.5X14 on my 30-06. No complaints. Had to go to the leupold high rings but the setup feels good to me.

My son has the same scope and he can use medium leupold rings. He’s got a custom 30-06 (Larry Knotts in Saline built it) with an old Mauser action he mounted it on.

My new Meopta is 56. I like it a lot. I have 2 Nikon's that are 40mm and 50mm.

50MM objective from one manufacturer is not the same as others.

Do y’all realize if you turn the magnification down on your scope you’re going to gather more light?

The only thing a 50mm objective is doing that a 40mm objective isn’t is it’s allowing you to see it at 7x instead of at 6x, and a 56mm will let you do it at 8x. The rest is the glass quality.

More to do with Zeiss glass than objective size.

Optics don’t gather light they transmit light.

Actually, most of my hunting scopes are 32 mm. Most of my handguns use 3-12x scopes w/ a few 2-7X; all are 32 mm. My varmint rifles are mainly 40 mm, but 2 of them use 44 mm. I've never had a cope w/ a 50 mm objective.

The bigger objective will allow for more light into the scope

Not sure.

I won the gun in a raffle about 12 years ago. Went to pick it up and my son (14 at time) went with me. We stayed about 4 hours as Larry went over everything about the rife and gunsmithing. My boy really enjoyed it and I gave him the gun. It’s one of his most prized possessions. And man it shoots smooth.

My dad, a lifelong deer hunter, has never mounted a 50mm scope or larger on any of his rifles. Besides the extra weight, you have to use higher rings and risk having to use a cheek riser to be able to look through the optic.

I rather a slim-and-trim 40mm objective from a quality manufacturer. I don't want a giant telescope monstrosity on my rifle and rather the slim and lightweight profile from a smaller scope.
