ESPN Can’t Afford Monday Night Football Any More

quote:

Why ESPN Could Abandon NFL Football

quote:

ESPN pays $2 billion a year to the NFL for Monday Night Football and one NFL wild card playoff game. As ESPN’s business collapses that ESPN’s decision on whether or not to bid to keep Monday Night Football would be the first big test of how rapidly that business is deteriorating.

quote:

First, quietly, ESPN has been able to pull off a dramatic judo move in recent agreements with its affiliates, one whose importance cannot be overstated: There is no longer specific contract language that requires the cable giant to have NFL games in order to earn its lofty (and industry-envied) subscriber fees

quote:

Effectively ESPN is tossing up a trial balloon letting Wall Street know they probably can’t afford to keep Monday Night Football rights past 2021 when its current deal expires

quote:

ESPN’s business is collapsing so rapidly that they are now trying to figure out which would be more destructive — losing billions on the NFL or losing billions in cable and satellite revenue because they don’t have the NFL.

quote:

Put simply, ESPN’s business is screwed and they’re trying to make it look like that’s a good thing by leaking this story to a friendly source.

quote:

“But the good news is the network would have some serious spending money it hasn’t had in years. Take the $2 billion that it is now giving the NFL, subtract say $350 million for (NFL) rights to highlights, and that still leaves a billion and a half dollars for ESPN to play. ESPN could go on a spending spree targeting CBS’ college football deal with the SEC, a Big 12 deal, baseball post-season, rights to NHL hockey, EPL soccer and a whole buffet table of other properties that would prove beneficial in its negotiations with distributors who would want to lower their sub fees.”

Wonder who would pick up MNF.

NBC seems good with their SNF coverage, and it's like the most watched TV show every week.

If ESPN is losing money on NFL games, they're not alone.

I used to watch ESPN every morning. That was years ago back when they had a couple of anchors and they showed non stop highlights with some funny commentary from time to time. Things changed when they moved from Connecticut to LA.

Now the show is a mixture of sports, garbage, and social commentary. ESPN got carried away with having 4 people standing around doing Sportscenter. Also trot out actors on the show to talk sports and let them push their new movie... WGAF? Throw in a half dozen shows during the day with people yelling excitedly while arguing over who is the greatest person, team, franchise, etc... all the while pushing social issues and it just sucks.

This past Saturday I was trying to watch ESPN and they had some guy that looks about 5’4 and 120 showing and talking about uniforms 8 different teams would be wearing. He talked about the colors, the patterns, the helmet colors, decals, etc... I got my wife to come in and watch a minute of it so she could see for herself how far ESPN has fallen. She justed busted out laughing.

ESPN has totally lost the plot. Just about to give up on College Game Day as well. It is now unwatchable for me. Used to grab a cup of coffee and catch up on sports news. Now it just pisses me off so I stopped watching them. ESPN can go out of business completely and I could care less.

Regardless of how Clay wants to spin it, ESPN getting out from under one of the worst sports rights deals ever put to paper is a good move long term.

CBS paying SEC 50-60 million for broadcasting rights anually. That's a bargain to what ESPN is paying the NFL for their shite games.

If true this would be the most ESPN thing ever.

You're having expense issues due to your large live tv contracts so you dump the most popular sport in America so that you can sign other less popular sports to live tv contracts?

Lol that company will go bankrupt in 10 years. Guaranteed.

NFL should cater to their new target audience and play MNF on Bravo or Lifetime

And then they wonder why their business is going down the shitter.

2 billion dollars for 18 games? About 12 of which are going suck.

I'd like to see MNF back on ABC network television. Long term the NFL should as well. Sports slowly lose their audience when they become less accessible to maximize short term profits.

NFL network is a great idea. For shows about the NFL, not live NFL games. ESPN is a wonderful partner for the NFL to publicize their sport, but should not be broadcasting the games.
