I lived on Dauphin Island from 2004-2010.

the commute to work was a bitch.

But I had friends who always wanted to come down during the spring and summer and hang out. I wasn't far from the water obviously.

but any time a storm (hurricane) entered the Gulf.. time to get the frick out of dodge. I couldn't go home for a few weeks after Katrina.

had to scavenger pretty much and stay at different friends homes in Mobile there for a minute.

but most of the time it was quiet.

Except during the Summer especially during the Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.

pros and cons like most places.

Portofino is very nice. They did a great job with that development.
Are you retiring there?

Only problem I would have with PB is there wouldn't be as many nice dining options as I would like. And there is def a pretty big trash factor in the boardwalk. LOL
You will be far enough away though to where you won't be around them though

Are there people who actually live there who aren't making money off the tourist trade?

I live pretty close to the beach in the Florida pan handle right now and I love it. So, count me in.

I'm middle aged and happily married so my pussy chasing days are over but I could've totally gotten into to living in a beach town in my 20's for no reason other than the endless strange that would be offered. Bang a hot, crazy chick? Who cares, she will be going home by the end of the week.

You escape to hell during peak season? I wish I could not live in New Orleans in the Summer months. It's either raining, or hot as shite.

You escape to new Orleans, but you miss Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and most of festival season and you just stay for hurricane season and the hottest months of the year?

Dafuq is wrong with you?

Having spent a whole summer each in Gulf Shores and in Rosemary Beach working on construction projects, i think it really depends on which town you end up in. In each case, I got to the respective town in mid to late march and left around labor day, so i got a dose of off season and peak season in each. Overall, both had their merits and drawbacks; Gulf shores, everything was alot more of a drive to get gas, groceries, etc, but it was much more reasonably priced. Gulf Shores is also a ghost town when not in the peak season (its kind or eerie to drive around when its like that). Rosemary had alot more permanent residents, but tourist prices for everything stayed all year round unless you drove all the way into PCB. Tourist influx was about the same in both places. Believe it or not, I actually preferred the gulf shores crowd to the snooty Rosemary crowd.

I just moved to Gulf Shores to work and enjoy the beach. Eventually I want to move onto the back bay in the orange beach area, but right now I'm 5 minutes from the beach and about to buy a Hobie Kayak to start fishing. Traffic is terrible right now but so is traffic in BR.

We rented a place a few years ago, on the back side of Fort Morgan Road, on the bay just across from Bon Secours Wildlife Refuge. The house is in a wooded area, with close-ish neighbors, kind of like the suburbs but with lots of trees. It's about 13 miles from Bruno's grocery.

Loved it, even in mid-summer there's always shade somewhere, the beach is about two minutes ride away, but also easily reached on bicycle if you're so inclined. The worst part, to me, would be having to drive all the way into G.S. for groceries and Mass.
