Is he eligible to get Medicaid? That would open up some options for him
Dental Medicaid only covers the young - 0 to early 20s.
Best bet would be the Dental School in New Orleans.

Go to the local dental school.

Call the dental school in NOLA. .It will take about a month to get in, first appt cost 150 but will be put towards the cost of services. If he has to be seen asap to get it pulled, I can get him in at the charity place. (Stacyotot at g.mail) They charge 50 to pull a tooth n will give him a referral to the dental school to do the other work. (Bro in law is an oral surgeon n just helped a friend get some work done)

Thanks Stacy. My bro in law is a dentist so I'm going to call him in the AM to see what he says. I may be emailing you, though.
He's in serious pain, can't eat or sleep. He says "all that's left is the root", which I'm not really sure what that exactly entails but it sounds bad. So he made need to do something sooner rather than later

I just asked him, he makes too much for Medicaid he says
Then he can afford to go to a dentist and pay $10 for an antibiotic to deal with the infection. He can't afford a root canal, but he could probably afford having the dentist pull his tooth if needed.

I know a guy that was in excruciating pain. He didn't have dental insurance. Went to the dentist on S. Harrels Ferry and they pulled the tooth for something like $150. He has no tooth, but no pain.
I think his other option was a root canal.
Recommend he clean his mouth with Listerine and Hydrogen peroxide constantly and try to get him some amoxicillin if he's not up for getting the tooth pulled. Most dental pain is due to infection...it may buy him some relief while he scrapes up the necessary funds.

Good to know, thanks.
This guy says all of his problems are in the back of his mouth, so he may just need to suck it up and have those pulled

He needs to get that treated professionally ASAP. Getting a tooth pulled is better than an infection that gets well into the bone.

Medicaid can be a kind of lengthy process to get enrolled, and I'm pretty sure that you have to be worth close to literally nothing to qualify.
I believe your monthly income has to be below $499.00 to get it.

If he can afford to resort to drugs, he can afford a dentist.

One of my exes is a dentist. She would volunteer at a free clinic on the weekends where she would do completely free dental work for the poor/homeless. There has to be some in Louisiana. And sometimes dentists will just do work pro bono if you contact them

I didn't read the entire thread, so apologies if this has already been posted.
I'm not in the BR area, but look up area "community clinics".
They often offer dental services, and are for people without insurance and who are underemployed in Louisiana. They are cheap or free, depending on the patient's situation.

Medicaid only covers dental services for children and pregnant women. Your friend's best options are to find a dentist who will work with him on a payment plan, go to the dental school clinic, or go to a Federally Qualified Health Center. Those are medical homes which have multiple services, including dent, under one roof. Their goal is to increase access to care.

Medicaid. LA Medicaid under the new "Bayou Health" plan just started paying for limited dental care with a dollar limit per year. Better than nothing.
Only issue at this point is that few private dentists have done the paperwork to accept payments from Bayou Health and therefore don't work with these patients yet. But there are exceptions including my wife's (no pics) practice in Prairieville.
Edit: If he makes too much for Bayou Health then maybe he should just pay out of pocket instead of expecting all his health expenses to be free. Most dentists will work out generous payment plans.

There is a huge free dental clinic going on this weekend at the Alario Center on the Westbank.
Get your buddy down there this morning. It is for patients like your friend.
In the future, you can contact any dentist, explain your situation, and they will put you in touch with someone to help you.

Car or bus I would imagine.

If you are near a local Aspen dental , you can use them. They might take advantage of you but their primary audience are the poor.
