Just ask your bro in law to help your friend out. That sounds like an easy enough solution to your problem. Unless of course he is too far away. There are also clinics that see patients based on income. Look for a FQHC or All Saints dental clinic in Covington.

Sounds like right now he could see anybody.

He probably needs a course of antibiotics and pain meds before anyone touches that tooth anyway.

While treating the infection he can look toward dental help.

Just saves a step. Would be nice to walk into dentist and have the tooth worked on then, not see us in a week.

Probably, but some patients are in so much pain, they just want the tooth out ASAP.

Is this serious?

Poor people ABSOLUTELY go to the dentist.

There is some government assistance plan.

Long ago, when my wife worked at a title 1 school, all of those kids were ALWAYS going to the dentist...

for free of course...

Risks of infectious invasive dental work? It can be pretty serious. Antibiotics and Tylenol#3 or Vicodin if possible are standard.

If there is swelling, that tooth ain't coming out without antibiotics.

I don't think there is any Medicaid assisted dental care for those over 18.

True. However oral surgeons usually don't follow this protocol.

I agree. Usually I add dexamethasone or a Medrol dose pack if they are swollen badly.

this is trailer park therapy but it may help
if you have antibiotics on the shelf give them to him and tell him to take 2x day till the swelling goes down and the pain subsides

if he goes to dentist with an infection they are going to send him home with a prescription and tell him to come back when it's cleared.

like I said, trashy but it may help

He needs a dentist. Tooth infections can be serious business.

I can attest to this. Had a sinus infection that I delt with myself by using the leftover antibiotics from my girlfriend. Thought all was well, but then about a week later I had a raging toothache. Went to the dentist. He said there was nothing immediately noticeable so he did the X-rays. As soon as he walked back into the room with the film he said "you need a root canal." He showed me that the infection had gone through the lower part of my sinuses and had gotten into my molar from the top.

And let me tell you... when he hit that infected area at the very base of the root I experienced pain like I didn't know existed. He explained that infected nerves can't be numbed.

If his tooth is as bad as it sounds, he will need antibiotics for that mutha. When I had a bad tooth pulled several years ago, the dentist told me that tooth infections fester for a month or more before they start causing pain.

In the meantime, try clove oil. It has some numbing and antiseptic properties that gave me some relief when I had to wait through the weekend before I could see the dentist. Apply it with a q top. Rinse out with peroxide and listerine too.

So sorry for him. If he could have been in New Orleans yesterday or today, LAMOM was held at Alario Center in Westwego. Free dental care. I volunteered there today as RN doing general health assessment.

Not sure what choices he has, if any. Some dentist's offer a payment plan, but I think the interest rates are pretty high. Sucks to need dental work and not have the money.
