I am taking a Concealed Carry class at Acadiana Gunworks in March with Chris Ortego. His website looked pretty legit and had lots of good info.

Do you know anything about him and his classes?

I am in the middle of the process currently. Class was taken last month. Paperwork is filled out electronically on the state police website. You either go to their office or mail in fingerprints (in their office electronically is supposed to be much faster) I completed paperwork and fingerprints on Tuesday. When your permit is approved they email you a link to pay and then once you pay, they mail out the card. My instructor said that some people have been getting them back in 10 days. I am curious to see how long it takes...

I'm looking to take a CC class after hunting season

Same here. I know Dawg teaches a course here in BR. Anyone on the OB recommend a class or instructor in BR for January/February? Anyone to stay away from?

It was so easy to get a CC in Washington State. Just get fingerprinted and pay without needing to take a class.
Permit in hand in about 2 weeks.

Great info - I wish more dealers would also recognize the ATF waiver for a NICS check if your CC permit was issued after 05/09/2015. It must be at their discretion because there are some that still require the NICS and others that don't.

Do you know of a good website or anything that would cover La's reciprocity laws with Tx?

When carrying in a state that has reciprocity with the state of your permit, you must follow the laws of that state. Reciprocity simply means they respect your permit.

Check out handgunlaw.us for state-by-state info.

any recommendations for a good defensive shooting class in new orleans?

I have taken classes with VATA group in Slidel and Bearco in Covington. Both are excellent groups and I learned a lot. I took Dynamic Focus Handgun with Bearco and Defensive Pistol Intro and 1 with VATA. I
I've also taken Defensive Carbine Intro, 1, and 2 with VATA but I guess that isn't exactly CC stuff...

I'm not sure of any NOLA-specific courses. Brannon Lebouef runs NOLAtac but I don't think they do anything more than regular CC courses.

I haven't met him personally but he posts in our CC Instructor Facebook group often. He seems knowledgeable and keeps us updated on current stuff in the firearms-law world. I bet it will be a solid course.

And yes, there were some people in the class that had never fired a gun and made me nervous to know they might be armed in public.

I hear this line of thinking all the time. I've mentioned it before - training does not change your intent.

Most of the public falls in this category - most likely bad shots but never a threat to anyone since they don't have ill intent. As long as their safety fundamentals are down (following the 4 commandments) there's no reason to worry.

If a person is a bad shooter but never draws his/her gun, what difference does it make? If a person is an amazing shooter and is a psycho killer what difference does it make? The person merely being trained does not change intent.

Plus if the person is brand new to shooting, it's doubtful he/she will start immediately carrying. It takes a lot of confidence to make that last step.

(I know you may have not meant anything by your comment but just wanted to make a point. )

Are there courses in the area (Lafayette) that are on weekdays instead of weekends?

I think an instructor I know may be trying to do more advanced courses in Lafayette soon but he hasn't started yet as far as I can tell.

Check around on google but you may have to travel some to take a more advanced course.

Who's got a class that focuses primarily on the legal aspects of concealed carry?

Are any put on by the state police department? I'd rather my permit come from LSP rather than Joe blow who's got a teaching certification.

I believe BRPD started doing it recently. You might want to check into that though.

Mine was taught by an instructor at Precision who is also a lawyer. That was in 2011 though.

But one thing for you to understand - the shooting portion isn't necessarily testing your skill level. You should be able to hit the silhouette every time. The main thing it that is being tested is your shooting form and your firearm safety.

The safety aspect is always priority one (I am an instructor as well), but I still feel that the marksmanship is important. Otherwise why even bother requiring it?

Also, I've found that new shooters transitioning from never shooting a gun to shooting a .22 don't even blink. The thing I want them to get past is the dread or apprehension of a controlled explosion in their hand. The .22 just doesn't provide that.

All permits are issued by LSP. In order to apply for a permit you have to complete a class taught by a LSP certified teacher.

Meh

The fact that there are as many instructors as there are makes me leary of their actual qualification. I'd rather take the class and get the permit from LSP if they had classes.

Sorry instructor guys.

Eh, no skin off our backs. Just don't get it from someone who says they can do it in an afternoon, or over dinner, or any BS like that. I had a few friends tell me they had that offered and it scares the sh!t out of me. When I started to explain the legalities they had to know, and how much they "knew" that was wrong, they were lucky enough to be swayed from that awful path.
