I am heartbroken and angry this morning.

I'm 28 and since I was a kid my grandparents have co-owned 1500 acres in the foothills of the Appalachians here in Alabama. Found out this morning they are selling their half to my uncle who owns the other half. Worst part? They close on Friday. This has been in the works for months, they never spoke to their son, or us, the grandkids, about it.
This is what hurts. I found out I'm having a son in the past few weeks. I want him to have the same experiences I did at the farm. Riding around, mowing the hay, playing in the creek, hunting, bonfires....etc. I loved the land and wanted to build out there. Now it is being ripped away. I spent so much time with my grandfather out there, endless days of joy in the summers as a kid. Now my Pop's mind is failing(dementia) and can't do the stuff he used. My grandmother's excuse for selling was that my Pop couldn't cut his half of the pasture anymore. Which is a piss poor excuse. Why not call me to go cut it, I would have happily, joyously even.
How would y'all react to having your childhood and land that you always knew would be yours, your security, ripped away. And not told until 2 days before the sale goes through. When it has been worked on for 6 months. Uncle won't even sell us lots to build a cabin on.
Sorry guys, but I know y'all would understand this feeling. Most of the y'all who post on here understand the value of land beyond the monetary.
Edited to remove some stuff that was speculation and feeling on my part. Which wasnt the truth, just seemed that way. My grandparents had their, my dad's, mine, and my children's best interest in mind.

As shitty as it is, there isn't a thing you can do about it. Remember the good times that you had. Sorry man.

your uncle wouldn't let you on the property..?

I know for a fact one day the same thing will happen to me. I enjoy it while I have it, and when it comes to an end, I'll have the memories, and start working on something of my own before then.
Family doing shite things to each other has been occurring since Cain killed Able. It will never end.

Man, I would probably feel the same way you do. But as you already know, there is nothing you can do about it. Will you still have access to the property?
Side note, it's me and my wife's dream to buy some land in North Alabama one day. We visit the Ft Payne / Mentone area a couple times a year.

Salmon has a valid point. Don't panic and talk to your Uncle.

Havent had that conversation yet. All we have done this morning is ask if he could carve out 25 acres for my dad, me, and my sis to build on. He then told us that other people have lots for sale on the adjoining property and said he couldn't do it. Nor did he offer to sell us lots.
Honestly, at this point it's done. The way this whole thing has gone down I don't think I want to spend anymore time up there anyway. This is a bitter, bitter feeling.
They have never really liked us. Their entire family is very quiet and reserved. We have always been more open and "loud" to them. I honestly think he wanted no one to know he co owned land with us after my grandparents pass on. I think they won't let us out there very much after this.

dude its family! You know his uncle wont let him on the property... at least that is how it works in my family these days

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like your uncle was planning on keeping you out from the beginning. I'd throw granny in a home and open a can of whoop arse on your uncle. Then move on.

Well that just plain sucks for the OP.

That sucks. We had a similar situation in my family. My great-uncle didn't have any children and had verbally told my uncle he was going to leave his portion of family land to him. My great-uncle was sick for a long time and even had some dementia before he passed.
At some point, before he passed, my great-aunt had him change his will and leave his land to a member of her family who has no blood relation to people from which the land came.
My great-uncle had never had his 100 acres cut and had some of the largest pine trees I'd seen. The first thing the new owner did was have the land clear cut and moved trailers on the land for him and all his trashy kids.

There's always an a-hole in every family. I can give good examples in every family I know.
I've seen family wars over deer hunting. Unreal but it happens all the time
If they are selling the land couldn't you later buy land with the inheritance ?

That sucks. Money talks and nothing good last forever. Good luck on finding a new lease.

The way this is happening we are wondering if they are going to cut us all out. Even though my dad is an only child. If we do get the inheretence, than absolutely. Money won't be an issue, for me, my kids, or their kids, if we handle it correctly.

You need to drive the price up on your great-uncle. Get your grandparents to ask for a higher price.

How do you have an uncle if your dad is an only child?
