I want to try and avoid the whole Destin/Pensacola tourist section of the gulf coast. Any suggestions of smaller beach towns and beaches?

Dog Island...can't get any further away from tourists. Minimal amenities but essentially empty beach.

try the Ft. Morgan area east of Gump Shores. even if every house is full, the beaches aren't. Relaxonthebeach.com, myers and reed all rent many houses

Dune Allen on 30a is an amazingly uncrowded beach. The sand and water are epic.

I always like Venice beach FL. Mainly old people and finding sharks teeth is fun.

Cape San Blas, just east of Port St. Joe - really nice, secluded, white sand, nice surf, good fishing, has lots of beach houses for rent.

And despite the rumors posted here, I've never seen any of those venomous beach snakes.

It's a well-kept secret. But don't tell anybody, because then the numerous beach rodents will come get you, and jellyfish and sharks will eat you or sting you - and the nearest hospital is not real close. LOL.

In general the beaches get prettier the further South that you go.

The panhandle/big bend area of the State is getting a lot of interest lately.

I havent been to Mexico Beach in many years but a decade ago it was pretty and relatively undeveloped.
