"And wasn't letting go". Do you remember the fully healed Faulk standing on the sidelines? It was a little awkward.
All About 3 !!

geez...........this shows up every 3 days on the rant.
the legend of cecil collins.
billy cannon, jim taylor, charles alexander, dalton hilliard, kevin faulk.......all greater. Not even a contest.
I would agree that collins had a great stretch of a few games, but that's hardly enough to compare him to career's of legendary lsu rbs. I would argue that justin vincent's stretch of games at the end of the 2003 championship season was more impressive.

Cecil was the man and everybody on the team knew it.
quote:
Collins had been Louisiana's 1995 Mr. Football after rushing for 7,833 yards and 99 TDs for his career with the Leesville Wampus Cats. However, he had been ruled academically ineligible for the 1996 season. All that season, insiders raved about how Cecil tore up the first string while running for the scout squad.

I remember going to an LSU practice and Rondell Mealy was looking better than both of them. I'm not saying that he was better, but that was the number one RB group in LSU history.

Cecil Collins played in three games and people want to anoint him the best ever...
He was good in the three games he played in, but the sample size is way too small to judge him against players that played for much longer.

Cecil was probably the most talented but if you can't transition that talent onto the football field, you are not the best.

Those 600 yards were impressive enough to get drafted. I cant think of anybody else that got drafted with a smaller resume.

Collins was also one of the best high school players to ever come out of the state. People knew he was good and couldnt wait to see him play. Then he delivered big time for those 3 games.
This is not a knock on Faulk, its more of a knock on Collins, that he wasted so much talent.

Those of us that actually watched Herschel and Bo know what a real beast looks like. Cecil had it.
Posted on 9/20/13 at 9:32 am to Placebeaux
he did play football after that. he didn't play 4 games....break his leg....and then get drafted. His time at LSU grabbed some attention, but he still had to show he could play at McNeese for an NFL team to take a chance on him after a major leg injury.

Cecil was an amazing back and probably more talented than Faulk. Too bad he was an idiot.

He did actually play for the Dolphins and was drafted in the 4th round, I believe. Then he got arrested again...
That run vs MSU with only one shoe
But Faulk was the better player

but hey, let's try to throw on 3rd and 3 to close out the game vs. giving to Cecil...

Faulk was better. Period. You can't pretend to know what Collins could have done. Talent doesn't mean shite; results do.
Posted on 9/20/13 at 9:41 am to ell_13
Faulk is the overall GOAT. Collins is the woulda-coulda-shoulda GOAT.
Posted on 9/20/13 at 9:42 am to jrevonte
Having watched Collins a few games in high school and his "few" college games, he certainly could have been better than Faulk on the field. Fact is we will never know....
That is the tragedy of someone with that level of talent who just throws it away...... one never knows. Its always "Coulda, woulda, shoulda"...

It's an opinion of talent...not of accomplishment.
I saw them both. Faulk was GREAT. He was quick as a cat...and ran with very good power for a guy his size. He seemed to always get a couple of yards after contact. His ability to catch the ball made him even better. Plus, he was an All-American type on special teams. The guy could come in and be our best RB right now. You cannot take anything away from Kevin Faulk.
But, from a strict running perspective, Collins was better, IMO. His burst was special, and he ran through tackles. His 4 yard runs always looked like he was a step away from breaking it...because he was.
Collins wasn't the same back after he tore up his ankle. The guy at McNeese and in the NFL wasn't the same player, IMO.

The offensive genius MORRIS WATTS. And let's throw it to a WR who playing a position he's never played before cause the other WR missed a team meeting the day beforee.

a recruting story I "heard":
During the recruting process CC (Leesville Wampus Cats) was asked, "Why go to LSU? They already have Faulk and Mealey."
CC's reponse: "I'm better than both of them."
He may very well have been. What a waste of talent and opportunity.
