The strongest tropical system of the year, Super Typhoon Sinlaku, underwent rapid intensification Sunday in the Pacific Ocean. The storm is moving toward Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands with wind speeds of 175 mph. This Category 5 storm could bring damaging winds and storm surge to the islands.

Guam will be on the outer bands

Living in LA and recovering from 3 strong storms in my adult life, I am always curious how these islands recover from typhoons without many resources. How does the Philippines, which is rocked by 8-9 typhoon landings per year and is very poor, constantly deal with it?

Fortunately, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are American territories, so they will get help from us

This might be strong enough to tip Guam over.

A lot of the houses on Guam are built for this. Many have flat roofs with no shingles, hurricane shutters built in around the windows, etc.

Their main power poles and traffic light poles are also hurricane reinforced.

Still waiting on my hazard pay for 15 months stationed on that tip-over prone island.

it probably cleans some of those places up. Washes out shite that needs to be removed. The loss of life in negligible when your living conditions already have you packed in gut to butt and unreliable services and electricity is a staple of everyday life.

We’ve come a long way in FL and elsewhere with improving codes for wind zones, but first floors in flood zones should probably be all concrete or block as you see in the islands.

I thought typhoon winds move opposite of a hurricane, and that’s The difference? Isn’t that video moving counter clockwise the same as a hurricane?

ETA: Nevermind I guess they move the same, only difference is a typhoon is in the pacific?

I remember seeing that video and damn near pissed myself laughing at that idiot and wondering how someone so stupid could be elected to public office.

Pretty much. Typhoons and Hurricanes are just different names for tropical cyclones.

Cyclones in the southern hemisphere spin clockwise. Northern cyclones spin counter clockwise.

Imagine being the ADM that got asked. How he kept a straight face and gave as professional answer as possible still amazes me. I would have responded with "are you retarded?" or something similar.

Was just coming here to ask that. Kind of like toilets below the equator.

He’s a Democrat, that’s how. He probably marched wif Martin luther da king and is still getting paid back for that.

I swear the Demo rat party wouldn’t exist without stolen money, propaganda, and gerrymandering. Maybe 5% of people actually believe the garbage they spout.
