BMJ Study

quote:

Results Of the 9288 titles screened, 37 studies (63 intervention arms, 9341 participants) were included. Average treatment duration was 39 (range 11-176) weeks, with average follow-up of 32 (4-104) weeks. The average monthly rate of weight regain was 0.4 kg (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.3 to 0.5) (mixed model 0.3 kg (0.2 to 0.4) monthly v control in RCTs). All cardiometabolic markers were projected to return to baseline within 1.4 years after the cessation of WMM. Weight regain was faster after WMM than after BWMP (by 0.3 kg (0.22 to 0.34) monthly), independent of initial weight loss. Estimates and precision were robust in sensitivity analyses.

Conclusions This review found that cessation of WMM is followed by rapid weight regain and reversal of beneficial effects on cardiometabolic markers. Regain after WMM was faster than after BWMP. These findings suggest caution in short term use of these drugs without a more comprehensive approach to weight management

weight loss fads always fail once stopped. it's always been a known thing that the only thing that is a long term solution is change in lifestyle

I never understand why this fact is seen as a dunk against GLP 1s??

"The drug stops working after you take it" yeah no shite. You know what else stops working if you stop doing it? Diet and exercise.

Is this some shocking revelation or even something that required a study? These are lifelong drugs. Diabetics develop Diabetic Ketoacidosis when they stop taking insulin. People with blood pressure issues get high blood pressure when they stop taking statins. People with depression get depressed when they go off meds. Water is wet and the sky is blue.

Yeah, it seems like this is an argument in search of an arguer.

I wish I could eat whatever I wanted and not get fat. That would be so awesome.

The biggest problem I have seen with these is that people make no other changes to their life other than just taking the drug (which makes them eat less).

If they don't change any of their habits then of course they are going to gain it all back when they start eating again.

I eat whatever I want and don’t get fat. The key is not wanting to eat garbage

My dad studied weight loss/gain and concluded that no one ever gained weight in a lifeboat.

I mean that’s the key with any weight loss. You have to make the lifestyle changes to sustain it.

This is true. I’ve eaten a lot of food today as I do most days. I’m 63 with 13% body fat. Today I ate:

- About 6 ounces of blueberries, yogurt and protein powder
- A couple of links of chorizo sausage
- Smoothy with one mango, one banana, and about 8 ounces of strawberry plus protein powder
- Salad with pecans, avocado, chicken, cranraisans, lettuce with olive oil

When I eat like this for a few weeks I don’t want the bad stuff.

Will once again state that this stuff has single handedly saved my wife's life from type 2 diabetes brought on by lupus.

Shes been non-diabetic by A1c standards for about a year. Flares decreased. Both her parents had type 2 diabetes so she was already predisposed, but she developed diabetes late in life after her first really bad lupus Flare.

Its cheaper than insulin for us. $35/month compared to 100+/month for the long term and short term insulin she was on.

How many calories is that? Sounds really low.
