By 2039, the US is set to have 650,000 fewer 18-year-olds than it does today. For universities, that demographic cliff poses an existential challenge. Fewer teenagers means fewer college applicants. Fewer applicants means fewer enrolled students. And fewer students means that some universities may not make enough money to keep their doors open. Katty Kay speaks to Nathan Grawe, Professor of Economics at Carleton College, about how difficult it will be for colleges to ride out this demographic drop, and what they will need to do to survive it.

Pushing abortion as healthcare was always going to be a net negative for the left. We just have to hope conservatives can hold on enough that our country isn't completely invaded before we get there.

So car insurance should be cheaper. Good.

We need fewer colleges in the US. In addition a lot of people who are attending g universities need to stop. There are lots of people, including myself, who receive a degree and never use it in their profession. College was only $950 a semester when I went so not nearly as burdensome as today, but it was still unnecessary.

Good. The less universities the better.

At least 35 institutions of higher education closed down last year. Around 30 shuttered in 2024. About 20 disappeared in 2023. The trend isn’t promising for small colleges and universities.

Will be awesome to be an 18 year old in 2039. Massive infrastructure built for you that will be way less crowded. Gladwell talks about how the Bill Gates generation lucked out in a similar way.

Good. The vast majority are full of communist liberals. They can learn a trade for all I care.

Universities have a glut of actual brick and mortar facilities. Many classes are offered only online. My wife is a full time student at Auburn (boo) and only has one in person class. Facilities and on campus housing will need to be reduced or curtailed dramatically. Maintenance costs for unoccupied buildings of that size are not insignificant.

The land that many of those buildings occupy is immensely valuable. It will be interesting to see what happens to it, especially for public institutions that don’t make it.

We need to be more selective, for sure.

This sounds weird to care about this. Higher education should be about actually making an impact, not a profit.

As claimed in all the mosques in the Muslim world " we have no need to defeat the West in battle. We will simply outbreed them".
