Awhile back I was complaining how no one had any Grand Highlanders in stock….

Yesterday I put a deposit on one that is still in the build stage. It is expected to arrive April 1. When it arrives, if I look at it and decide I don’t want it, they will give me my $500 back.

Is this the future of buying cars? Seems pretty simple. Dealerships don’t need to maintain massive inventory.

They know they have a good product and can keep the price up if the supply is lower, if you don’t buy it some one else will.

I use to sell cars, I believe that is the future (in most ways). Imo, future ‘dealers’ will have a demo of each model (maybe top line/base line) for consumers to try then order. No more commission sale ppl, rather ‘agents’ for the brand. With ppl being able to buy a hyundai/ Ford via amazon now only proves this is direction (but ppl still want to test drive/feel what they are buying before paying $20k+ for a product). Will be no more negotiating, pressure sales ppl/f&i managers, will be more like a furniture store transaction imo. Well see sooner than later

The only negative to that is having to wait and for how long? Nothing like driving your new car off the lot.

Agreed. I would guess a fair amount of car sales are snap decisions. Making people sit and think about it will hurt sales.

We did that with our CRv. Gave $500 down and waited for it to be built. Easy.

$50-100k decisions should not be snap decisions. This is why people are "broke" (not to mention Jaxxsyn's travel ball costs.)

Totally retarded. How long you wait for a build depends on the vehicle and when you order it. New 250 I waited about four months. Bronco (in the middle of the parts shortage) took about the same. If you live in Georgia and order a model from a plant in Alabama, it may be six weeks.

Toyota is playing the “let’s intentionally make stock look low by keeping very few vehicles on the lot” game. And people are stupid enough to fall for
it. They haven’t had shite. The dealerships were very recently saying it was because of the chip issue, I have heard it personally several times. No other company is having that issue still. Toyota is fricking up IMO by using this tactic.

I get that this shortage may be by design, but it might not be. All of the GH’s sold in the US come out of one plant in Indiana. It’s a popular car because it’s a good car, and people want them. I have driven several vehicles in this class and this one is the best. The most comparable is probably the Honda Pilot, and the GH has lurched way ahead in the last 2 years. It’s what I want, and I really haven’t considered anything else.

Ordering something ahead of time will never be the cheapest option. If you are getting exactly what you want and paying a down payment for it, to some degree you are paying a premium. I’m not hating, let’s just admit it.

Your suggestion is there is no demand for vehicles on a lot and I would strongly disagree. Let’s take fleet vehicles for instance. Companies aren’t interested in waiting 6 weeks for a base model. There’s plenty of consumers that aren’t much different.

Which version you get? I can't believe people buy the Platinum Hybrid Max. Maybe they pull a boat or something with it because the Hybrid Limited can fricking go.

I don't know about that. Toyota (and all the brands they control) sold more vehicles globally than anyone one else last year. VW was number 2. Hyundai was number 3. Toyota sold more than 2 million vehicles than VW in that one year. I bet Toyota can adjust inventory pretty quickly if they feel a portion of the market is being lost.

Now, it's being reported that Stellantis is expecting dealers to sell 25% more vehicles than last year. I don't see how this can be achieved with the vehicles they offer without severely discounting them.

Well if it’s by design, they lost my business. Was looking at several vehicles and we liked the Grand Highlander but they only had one in stock and it wasn’t what we wanted. We went across the street and bought a vehicle.

I have special ordered my most four recent cars. I love it. The downside is that you cannot really negotiate the price compared to the one no one wants and has been sitting on the lot for 4 months.

I am very particular about options and styles, so it makes better sense for me to special order. Its almost impossible for me to find what I want in current inventory.

If its a car that has been in production for a few years, the lead time is 2-3 months. However if its a model change, or the plant is in limbo between next model year production, you have no idea how long it will take. As expected, one took almost 7 months and the other was 5 months. The ones in production already took just under two months and the other was three months.

You have to be a patient customer though. The dealer has very little info besides when the car goes into production and when it is shipped. The seven month one sat at the plant for two months. Its almost impossible to find out why and also when it will get shipped/built/etc.. The one that was built in less than two months, the dealer called me and was shocked that the car had been built and shipped so soon after initial order. Its not straightforward.

You have to have a patient mindset.

We did that for our 4Runner.

It was kind of neat, we got what we wanted exactly instead of what was in stock.

No haggling was nice... just wait for a call, show up with a check, about 20m of photocopying and paperwork and you're on your way.

It was the first time I didn’t feel like a hostage at a car dealership.

Some of you need to get counseling for you obsession with travel ball.

Don’t think he’s suggesting buying a vehicle is the same as making an impulse buy on a pair of shoes. But he has a legitimate point that many consumers don’t want to wait for their new car. I wouldn’t. When I need one, I need one. I’d think many new car purchases are relative to breakdowns or expensive repairs. The buyer doesn’t really want to/ can’t wait at that point.
