Michigan sues oil giants, alleging collusion to stifle renewables, EVs

The state of Michigan is suing major oil companies and an industry association, alleging that they colluded to hamper the adoption of renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs).
In a lawsuit announced Friday, Michigan sued BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell and the American Petroleum Institute.
It alleged they acted as a “cartel” as part of an effort to reduce production and distribution of renewable energy and restrain electric vehicles.
“To achieve this end, they have abandoned renewable energy projects, used patent litigation to hinder rivals, suppressed information concerning the hidden costs of fossil fuels and viability of alternatives, infiltrated and knowingly misdirected information-producing institutions, surveilled and intimidated watchdogs and public officials, and used trade associations to coordinate market-wide efforts to divert capital expenditures away from renewable energy — all to further one of the most successful antitrust conspiracies in United States history,” the suit said.
While multiple states and cities have already sued fossil fuel companies, saying they have caused climate-related harms, the allegations of colluding against climate-friendly technologies appears to be a newer legal strategy.
In a statement, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel connected the alleged collusion to energy prices in the state.
quote:
“These baseless lawsuits are a coordinated campaign against an industry that powers everyday life, drives America’s economy, and is actively reducing emissions. We continue to believe that energy policy belongs in Congress, not a patchwork of courtrooms,” said American Petroleum Institute senior vice president and general counsel Ryan Meyers.

Shut off all pipelines and vehicle transport of oil & natural gas going into Michigan?

Michigan has some of the highest electricity prices in the country because of their overt war on fossil fuels.
Their governor is a legit sociopath.

This is stupid. If alternate energy could provide the energy density at reduced costs to the consumer, there is nothing big oil could have done to stop it.
EVs have also taken off in the car market and the systems are beginning to migrate to other industries. If they are stifling it, they are doing a shitty job.

Some of the biggest lobbyist are mad other lobbyist are out lobbying them.
The two industries probably hired the same lobbyist to fight themselves.

Ever seen the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? It's a 2006 documentary that I am not even sure you could find anymore, but it was pretty eye opening how far companies went to try and keep the technology from advancing.
People can think what they want about Elon, but one of my favorite things about him is how he dislikes patents. His view is that they are landmines that keep technology from advancing.

It's currently 14 degrees in Detroit. The forecast for the next two weeks has the highest temperature rising to a balmy 27 degrees.
Extended periods of sub-freezing temperatures is what stifles EVs, not oil companies.

State government cannot steer and stop demand for gas-powered and hybrids with lawsuits. Soooo stupid.

They should sue all 300M of the American people for not wanting EV's

Should sue the free market enterprise system, not XOM, CVX or API.
Instead, should spend energy as society on how to make the right renewable energy viable and scalable for all of mankind (pun intended). Its the right thing to do.
That great ball of nuclear fission in the sky mocks our political economics and free market limitations.

If he really believes this then he has a very fundamental misunderstanding of the US patent system. The entire point is to encourage inventors to publicly disclose their technology (in return for a relatively short term of protection) vs. keeping everything secret. Someone smarter will see the disclosure and figure out a way to improve the technology, often by designing around the patent. Society as a whole benefits from the system. Some would argue that has led to the USA's historical position as a technical powerhouse compared to the rest of the world.

This is a ploy by the govoner who is looking at a potential presidential run.

Like the tobacco lawsuits, this is a shakedown by a state with shitty government.

I’m picturing both industries being represented by Don King.
